GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Ryan Moore (Glenolden, PA/Interboro) returned two interceptions for touchdowns within a span of 57 seconds in the second quarter to help Gettysburg defeat Lebanon Valley 23-9 in both teams' 2001 football season opener on Saturday.
Moore, a senior all-conference linebacker, scored on a 19-yard interception return with 7:32 left before halftime to give the Bullets (1-0) the lead for good at 7-6. On the second play of the Flying Dutchmen's next drive, Moore struck again with a nearly-identical pick-and-return from 22 yards away to make it 14-6.
Gettysburg freshman Mike Lublanecki (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) carried 18 times for a team-best 80 yards and one touchdown in his collegiate debut. Sophomore Jay Toscano (Seaville, NJ/Ocean City) chipped in with 66 yards on 18 carries to help the Bullets roll up 221 yards on the ground, nearly 100 more than their season average in 2000 (126.9).
Steve Roberts scored on Lebanon Valley's first drive of the day and finished with 20 carries for a team-high 82 yards. Dutchmen quarterbacks Dallas Noll and Dennis Yagmourian went a combined 17-of-42 through the air for 161 yards and three interceptions.
Lebanon Valley (0-1) linebacker Chad Hoofnagle led all players with 20 tackles, including 15 solo stops and seven for loss.
Trailing 6-0 and forced to punt on its first four possessions of the game, Gettysburg got just the spark it needed from its top defensive player midway through the second quarter.
With the Dutchmen facing third-and-7 on their own 20, Moore stepped in front of a Noll pass and raced to the end zone untouched for his third career score, giving the Bullets a 7-6 lead.
Moore dropped Roberts for a five-yard loss on Lebanon Valley's next play from scrimmage, then intercepted another Noll offering, this time scampering in from 22 yards out to make it 14-6 with 6:35 left before halftime.
With Yagmourian assuming LVC's quarterback reins, the Dutchmen marched 61 yards on 14 plays on their next drive, but had to settle for a 29-yard field goal from Jim Poverotney and a 14-9 halftime deficit.
Gettysburg's Sam Shipley (Rahway, NJ/Rahway) booted his first collegiate field goal from 33 yards to restore the Bullets' eight-point edge at 17-9 with 3:06 left in the third quarter.
Three plays later, freshman Joseph Gossweiler (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) put the Bullets in position to deliver the knockout punch by returning his first collegiate interception to the Lebanon Valley 41 with 56 seconds left in the third.
In a moment eerily reminiscent of its hard-luck 2000 season, Gettysburg marched to the Dutchmen 3 before fumbling into the end zone for a touchback that kept Lebanon Valley's hopes alive.
The Bullet defense, led by back-to-back quarterback hurries from linebacker Keith Adams (Hanover, PA/New Oxford), held the Dutchmen to 14 yards on six plays and forced a Scott Marek punt.
Following an exchange of 3-and-out possessions, Gettysburg marched 61 yards on 12 plays capped by Lublanecki's four-yard touchdown run to seal its first season-opening victory since 1997.
Lebanon Valley's final possession ended on three consecutive incompletions at the Gettysburg 9.
The Dutchmen wasted little time in their bid to break a seven-game losing streak to the Bullets.
Pete Henning returned the opening kickoff 41 yards to the Gettysburg 48 and, six plays later, Roberts found the end zone from two yards out for a quick 6-0 lead less than three minutes into the game.
Lebanon Valley drove to the Bullet 6 late in the first quarter, but two dropped passes and a bad snap on a field-goal attempt derailed the Dutchmen's attempt to extend their lead.
In addition to his two interceptions returns, Moore led Gettysburg with 14 tackles and broke up three more passes on the afternoon. The two-touchdown performance tied a Centennial Conference record for interception returns for touchdowns in a single game, held by four other players. Dickinson's Matt Bixler last performed the feat on Oct. 14, 1995 against Western Maryland.
Sophomore Chris Jordan (Bethesda, MD/Gonzaga) added 10 total tackles (8 solo) and one pass breakup for the Bullets. The victory also marked the first collegiate start for junior Nate Overholt (Souderton, PA/Souderton), who completed 5 of 9 passes and carried four times for 41 yards.
Adam Frantz was in on 10 tackles for Lebanon Valley while teammate Malou McIntire made eight stops and forced a fumble.
Gettysburg, which has already tied its victory total from last season (1), returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 8 at Hampden-Sydney. Game time is 1 p.m.
