GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg opened its 2001 campaign with a 1-0 victory over Mary Washington in the Gettysburg College Women’s Soccer Classic on Saturday.

 Liz Wesolowski (White Plains, NY/Ursuline) scored 2:36 into the game to give the Bullets the lead and the Bullet defense was able to hold the Eagles to eight shots in the shutout.

Bullet goalkeeper Carine Doyle (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan) made five saves while Mary Elizabeth Fulco recorded 15 stops.  Gettysburg outshot Mary Washington 19-8 for the game.

 In the day’s opening game, seventh-ranked William Smith defeated 19th-ranked Wilmington, 1-0.  Alyson Stachura scored the game’s lone goal in the 12th minute off of an assist from Felicia Crump.   Quaker goalkeepers Krista Kalkhoff and Anna Karlsson combined for three saves while Heron goalie Leah Cornwell also had three stops.

 The Gettysburg College Women’s Soccer Classic concludes Sunday with Wilmington slated to play Mary Washington at 12 p.m. and Gettysburg set to battle William Smith at 2 p.m.
