GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Jamie “Boo” Harris connected with Teron Powell on three touchdown passes to help 13th-ranked Western Maryland roll past Gettysburg 55-7 in the Centennial Conference (CC) football opener for both teams on Saturday.
Harris, the 2000 CC Co-Offensive Player of the Year, hit Powell on scoring strikes of 5, 7 and 25 yards as the Green Terror (2-1, 1-0) duplicated its largest-ever point total and margin of victory against the Bullets (1-2, 0-1). WMC, which has won the last five meetings between the teams, also downed Gettysburg 55-7 in 1997.
Jemel Johnson carried 12 times for a team-high 80 yard and one touchdown as the Green Terror rolled up 297 yards on the ground among its 468 yards of total offense. Harris completed 9 of 17 passes for 90 yards in his two-plus quarters of work and also carried 14 times for 68 yards and one touchdown.
Gettysburg halfback Mike Lublanecki (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) continued to shine in his freshman season, carrying 13 times for a career-high 147 yards, including a 46-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that accounted for the Bullets' only points.
Gettysburg linebacker Ryan Moore (Glenolden, PA/Interboro) became the CC's all-time leading tackler with 17 tackles (12 solo, 1 for loss) on the afternoon. The senior captain has recorded 356 tackles in his collegiate career, surpassing the previous record of 355 held by former Ursinus player and head coach Paul Guenther (1990-93).
While Harris again delivered a marquee performance, it was the Western Maryland defense that opened the scoring and sent the Green Terror on the way to its 29th consecutive conference victory.
With Gettysburg facing third-and-9 at its own 6, Jason Wingeart forced a fumble and Joe Szymanek returned the loose ball eight yards for a touchdown with 5:46 left in the first quarter.
The Western Maryland defense held the Bullets' 3-and-out on their next possession, setting up a six-play, 39-yard scoring drive. Harris capped the march with a five-yard fade pattern to Powell for his first touchdown and a 14-0 Green Terror advantage with 2:42 remaining in the first.
French Pope's 19-yard punt return early in the second quarter again set up Western Maryland at the Bullet 39 and the Green Terror took eight plays to build the lead to 20-0, this time on Harris' 12-yard scamper with 10:51 left in the half.
Gettysburg marched 11 plays to the Western Maryland 2 on its next drive, but again turnovers thwarted the Bullets' attempt to crack the scoreboard.
Quarterback Nate Overholt (Souderton, PA/Souderton) fumbled while escaping the Green Terror pass rush and Matt Wilchinski picked up the ball and rumbled 39 yards to the 50 to set up another scoring drive.
Johnson carried 21 yards on the next play from scrimmage and Harris followed with a nine-yard toss to Powell at the Gettysburg 20. Harris carried four times to the Bullet 7, then found Powell in the right corner of the end zone to make it 27-0 with 5:02 left in the half.
Jason Wiles forced a third Bullet fumble with 51 seconds left in the half, setting up a 14-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback John Luster to Joe Ellis that made it 34-0 at the break.
Johnson and Powell scored touchdowns to push the Western Maryland lead to 48-0 midway through the third quarter before Gettysburg got on the scoreboard.
Lublanecki broke a career-long 46-yard touchdown run with 2:08 left in the third quarter, his third touchdown in as many games this season. He has carried 39 times for a team-high 285 yards.
Louis Wright capped the scoring on a one-yard touchdown run with 12:26 left in the game.
John Czerapowicz (Wayland, MA/Wayland) and Cliff Mason (Greenville, PA/Greenville) each recorded 11 tackles on the afternoon for Gettysburg. Wingeart led the Green Terror defense with eight tackles (7 solo), one forced fumble and one interception.
The Bullets return to action on Saturday, Sept. 22 at Averett. Game time is 1 p.m.
