Dedrick nets game-winning goal to down Gettysburg 1-0 in double overtime

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Elizabeth Dedrick scored the game-winning goal in the 102nd minute to give seventh-ranked William Smith a 1-0 victory over Gettysburg and the Gettysburg Women’s Soccer Classic championship on Sunday.

The two teams battled through regulation and one overtime before Dedrick knocked in the tie-breaking goal off an Alyson Stachura rebound that just eluded the grasp of Bullet goalie Carine Doyle (Exton, PA/Bishop Shanahan).

Gettysburg’s best shot to get on the scoreboard came in the 79th minute when Lauren Melillo (Boalsburg, PA/Lewisburg) was stopped by Herons’ goalkeeper Leah Cornwell.

Stephanie Leveille helped William Smith post two shutouts in the tournament and was named the tournament Most Valuable Player.

The Herons outshot the Bullets 17-6 and did not allow their hosts a shot attempt in overtime. Doyle made seven saves while Cornwell had three stops.

In the day’s first game, Mary Washington and Wilmington ended in a 2-2 tie.

The Quakers scored two goals from Katie Foucht and Josalyn Strait to take a 2-0 lead with 38:35 remaining in the game.

The Eagles, however, came back with goals from Joeann Walker and Kathryn Amirpashie over a span of 12:28 to knot the game at 2-2 and force the two overtime periods.

The Herons went 2-0 in the tournament to take first place while the Bullets finished 1-1 to finish in second place.  The Eagles and the Quakers finished the tournament in a tie for third place at 0-1-1.

Gettysburg will be back in action Wednesday when they travel to 15th-ranked Messiah.  Game time is 4 p.m.
