Pete Vincelli (Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional) scored a career-high three touchdowns and
Mike Lublanecki (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) carried for a team-high 112 yards and one score to lead Gettysburg past Averett 61-6 in non-conference football action on Saturday.
Sophomore Gentris Bryant (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Acad.) carried 14 times for 65 yards and his first collegiate touchdown to help the Bullets (2-2) rush for 395 yards and post its largest margin of victory since a 62-7 win over Dickinson in 1984.
Ryan Moore (Glenolden, PA/Interboro) keyed the Gettysburg defense, scoring on a 36-yard interception return to start the 61-point barrage. Chris Jordan (Bethesda, MD/Gonzaga) recorded two of the Bullets' five interceptions, while freshman Campbell Henry (Chapel Hill, NC/Episcopal) returned his first collegiate pick 71 yards for a touchdown on the game's final play.
Tracey Smithers carried 15 times for a team-best 81 yards and one touchdown for Averett (1-1) while Michael Turkes picked up 76 yards on the ground in the loss. Kyle Acker hauled in three passes for 44 yards.
Gettysburg wasted no time in posting its largest scoring total in four years.
On the game's third play from scrimmage, Moore picked off Joe Perry's first pass attempt and returned it 36 yards for his third touchdown of the season and a 7-0 Gettysburg lead. With the return, Moore set new Centennial Conference (CC) records for interception returns for touchdowns in a season (3) and career (5).
Keith Adams (Hanover, PA/New Oxford) set up the Bullets' next score by picking off Perry's second pass at the Gettysburg 49 and returning the ball to the Averett 45. Five plays later, Vincelli capped the march with a three-yard touchdown run to make it 14-0 with 8:32 left in the first quarter.
After the Bullet defense forced the Cougars to go 3-and-out on their next possession, Gettysburg marched 64 yards on seven plays to take a 21-0 lead. Vincelli finished the drive with a 10-yard touchdown run at the 4:03 mark of the first quarter.
Gettysburg made it 28-0 with a seven-play, 63-yard drive early in the second quarter. Lublanecki carried for 13 yards on the first two plays of the drive, then ripped off a 15-yard run to give the Bullets first-and-10 on the Cougar 29.
Two plays later, Jay Toscano (Seaville, NJ/Ocean City) turned the corner on a 22-yard sweep for his first touchdown of the season.
Another big defensive play from Moore set up the Bullets' fifth touchdown. The senior linebacker jarred the ball loose from backup quarterback William Clark and Chris Hofman (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) recovered the ball on the Averett 22.
Following an incomplete pass, Lublanecki scored his fourth touchdown of the season on a 22-yard inside reverse to give Gettysburg a 34-0 lead with 8:53 left until halftime.
Vincelli used his feet and arm to give the Bullets a 41-0 lead at the intermission. He fired a 32-yard pass to Nick Nocar (Baltimore, MD/Gilman) down to the Averett 3, then scored his career-best third touchdown on the next play.
Sophomore quarterback Gavin Beier (Levittown, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) guided Gettysburg to a touchdown on the Bullets' first drive of the second half. Beier carried for 26 yards to the Cougar 4 on his first collegiate carry, then sprinted four yards to the corner of the end zone for his first collegiate touchdown on the ensuing play to make it 48-0 with 13:41 left in the third quarter.
Averett cracked the scoreboard when Tracy Smithers scored on a five-yard run to cap a nine-play, 70-yard drive and make it 48-6 with 4:13 remaining in the third quarter.
Bryant scored his first collegiate touchdown on a nine-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter to make it 55-6.
Moore, already the CC's leading tackler, finished with a team-best seven tackles on the day for Gettysburg. Alvin Moore paced the Cougars with 10 tackles.
The Bullets return to action on Saturday, Sept. 29 at home against Johns Hopkins. Game time is 1 p.m.
