Johns Hopkins Wins Defensive Battle With Gettysburg, 14-7

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Rob Heleniak tossed two touchdown passes – including the eventual game-winner on the last play of the first half – to lead Johns Hopkins past Gettysburg 14-7 in Centennial Conference football action on Saturday.

Heleniak, who survived four interceptions and five sacks on the afternoon, connected with Brian Wolcott on a 19-yard scoring toss as time expired in the second quarter to give the Blue Jays a 14-0 lead entering the locker room.

Gettysburg freshman Mike Lublanecki (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) scored his fifth touchdown of the season midway through the third quarter to pull the Bullets within 14-7, but stifling defensive efforts from both teams kept the game scoreless the rest of the way.

Heleniak completed 17 of 31 passes for 208 yards while freshman Adam Cook carried 24 times for a game-high 89 yards in his second collegiate start. Sophomore nose tackle Paul Smith helped the Blue Jay defense surrender only 136 yards of total offense, collecting a team-high 11 tackles, including five for loss and two sacks.

Senior Ryan Moore (Glenolden, PA/Interboro) spearheaded Gettysburg's strong defensive effort with 16 tackles, a blocked punt and his conference-best fifth interception of the season. Freshman fullback Mike Schwalb (Bernardsville, NJ/Pingry School) carried 13 times for a team-best 58 yards in his first collegiate start.

After averaging a combined 68.0 points per game over their last three meetings, the Bullets and Blue Jays each displayed dominating defenses this time around.

Zach Baylin set up and scored Johns Hopkins' first touchdown of the game. The senior wideout returned a punt 38 yards to the Gettysburg 20, then capped a six-play scoring drive with a five-yard touchdown reception to give the Blue Jays a 7-0 lead with 4:22 left in the first quarter.

Johns Hopkins marched 55 yards on six plays in the final 1:26 of the second quarter to take a 14-0 lead.

Heleniak opened the drive with a 10-yard pass to Baylin at the Gettysburg 44.  Three plays later, Heleniak tossed a 26-yard pass to Ben Stopper, who got out of bounds at the Bullet 19 with 0.3 seconds remaining on the game clock.

The Blue Jay signal-caller then fired a 19-yard strike to Wolcott in the left corner of the end zone to give the Blue Jays a 14-0 halftime advantage.

Gettysburg cut the JHU lead to 14-7 with a 15-play, 59-yard march on its first drive of the third quarter.

Quarterback Nate Overholt (Souderton, PA/Souderton) completed three of his seven completions on the drive, including an 11-yard toss to Schwalb at the Johns Hopkins 28.  Schwalb carried for 13 yards to set up Gettysburg first-and-goal at the Blue Jay 7 and Lublanecki punched into the end zone on fourth down for his fifth touchdown of the season with 5:13 left in the third quarter.

Forced to punt on their next three possessions, the Bullets caught a break when Moore blocked a Chris Smolyn punt and put the offense on the field at the Johns Hopkins 28 with 2:28 remaining.

On the second play of the drive Colin Slemenda sacked Pete Vincelli (Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional) on a halfback-option passing attempt to force a third-and-15 situation.  Overholt fired consecutive completions to Nick Nocar (Baltimore, MD/Gilman), but the sophomore split end came up short of the first down marker on fourth-and-7 to halt the home team's final chance.

Keith Adams (Hanover, PA/New Oxford) also put together an outstanding defensive effort for Gettysburg, recording 15 tackles and a half-sack.  Matt Diamond (Wayne, PA/Constoga) and Chris Hrynczyszyn (Bensalem, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) recorded interceptions for the Bullets.

The Gettysburg defense has recorded nine interceptions and 12 sacks in its last two games.

Following an open week, the Bullets return to action on Saturday, Oct. 13 at Ursinus.  Game time is 1 p.m.
