McNeil leads Gettysburg past Western Maryland, 86-64

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Curtis McNeil (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) scored a team-high 21 points and added four assists as Gettysburg rolled over Western Maryland 86-64 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action on Wednesday.

Jim Natale (Washington Crossing, PA/Council Rock) tossed in 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting while Kevin Boyle (Pennsburg, PA/Lansdale Catholic) added a season-best 12 to help the Bullets (12-4, 4-1 CC) move one half game ahead of Franklin & Marshall for first place in the CC West Division.

Alan Hoyt led the Green Terror (5-9, 2-3 CC) with 13 points while Jon Pearson also hit double digits with 10.

The Green Terror (5-9, 2-3 CC) scored the game's first five points and pushed its lead to 12-1 with 15:09 left in the first half before McNeil answered with nine straight to key a 13-0 run that put Gettysburg on top 14-12 less than four minutes later.

Natale knotted the game at 12 with a layup and Dami Oloruntoba (Glenn Dale, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt) scored two of his career-high nine points off an Antoine Gaither (Laurel, MD/Laurel) steal to give the Bullets their first lead of the night.

Greg Hill scored on a layup to knot the game at 14, but Gettysburg reclaimed the lead for good on a David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep) layup that started a 9-0 run.

Western Maryland cut the lead to seven, but Gettysburg used 22-5 run over the final 6:45 of the first half while holding the Green Terror without another field goal to take a 48-24 cushion into the locker room.

Western Maryland opened the half with a layup from Jack Kowalik, but the Bullets scored the next 11 points to make it 59-26 with 17:05 remaining.

In addition to his nine-point performance, Oloruntoba also set career highs with three assists and two blocked shots.

The Bullets shot 56 percent from the floor on the game, including a 60-percent showing in the first half.

With his 21 points, McNeil trails Bob Rudisill (1,028 points from 1975-80) by one point for 18th place on the program's all-time scoring list. The senior topped the 1,000-point mark with 35 points against Franklin & Marshall on Saturday.

Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at non-conference Villa Julie. Game time is 4 p.m.
