Jen Piccolomini recorded a game-high 23 points to lead Western Maryland past Gettysburg 49-48 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Wednesday.
Piccolomini, who had five points at halftime, went 8-for-16 on the floor, including 3-for-5 behind the arc and 4-for-5 from the free-throw line.
Kelly Cramp, the team's leading scorer in 2001-02, added eight points in the victory.
Jay Hodge (Silver Spring, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) led the Bullets (7-8, 3-4 CC) with a career high-tying 18 points and a career-high 18 rebounds, 14 of which came off the defensive glass.
Steph Drevna (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) added her second straight double-double and third of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The senior moved into sixth place on the program's scoring list surpassing
Donna Bourke (982 points from 1998-92) and now needs six points to become the sixth player in Bullet history to go over the 1,000-point mark.
In a game where both teams struggled to score points, Western Maryland led by as many as eight before holding off a Gettysburg rally to notch their fifth straight conference win.
With the score tied 41-all and 3:25 left in the game,
Brooke Brenneman hit two free throws to put Western Maryland ahead to stay at 43-41. Piccolomini then converted two free throws to push the lead to four.
Hodge hit a layup off a Drevna assist with 2:36 remaining to bring the Bullets back to within two points at 45-43. Piccolomini scored on a jumper to put the Green Terror ahead 47-43.
Hodge knocked down a jumper and the free throw to cut the deficit to 47-46 with 1:28 left.
Piccolomini missed a jumper, but Cramp grabbed a key offensive rebound. After a Gettysburg foul, Piccolomini sank two free throws to give Western Maryland a three-point advantage with 52 seconds left on the clock.
Hodge converted two free throws to bring the Bullets to within 49-48 with 36 ticks remaining. The Green Terror missed four free throws in the remaining 15 seconds, but Gettysburg missed a pair of jumpers and committed their 33rd and final turnover with six seconds left to help Western Maryland seal the win.
Despite shooting 20 percent from the floor in the first half, the Green Terror came out of the break leading, 17-16.
The Green Terror jumped out to an eight-point lead with 10:10 left in the game after going on an 18-11 run in the first nine minutes of the second half.
Piccolomini led Western Maryland during the nine-minute stretch with 10 points, including two treys.
With the Green Terror leading 35-27, the Bullets went on a 14-3 run in six minutes to take a three-point lead with 4:43 left in the game.
The first half was a seesaw battle with each team holding a four-point lead during the game's first 20 minutes.
With 36 seconds remaining in the first half Brenneman hit a layup to give Western Maryland a 17-16 lead going into halftime.
The Bullets return to action on Saturday at CC opponent Bryn Mawr. Tip-off is 1 p.m.
