Gettysburg holds off Swarthmore 69-51 in Centennial Conference action

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Terence Callahan (Bay Shore, NY/St. Anthony’s) scored a team-high 13 points to help Gettysburg defeat Swarthmore 69-51 in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s basketball action on Saturday.

 The Bullets trailed the Garnet Tide 15-10 with 9:39 left in the first half, but Gettysburg used a 19-4 run to head into halftime with a 29-19 lead.

 Jim Natale (Washington Crossing, PA/Council Rock) converted a lay-up to give the Bullets the lead for good and make it 16-15 at the 5:53 mark.

 Kevin Boyle (Pennsburg, PA/Lansdale Catholic) hit the front end of a 1-on-1 while David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep. School) and Callahan each added a bucket to extend Gettysburg’s lead to 21-15 with 3:55 remaining in the first half.

 Swarthmore (4-13, 1-6 CC) was held scoreless for 6 minutes before Kyle Lewis hit a pull-up jumper from the right wing to make it 21-17 at the 3:38 mark.

 The Bullets (14-4, 6-1 CC) used a bucket by John Schnebly (Hagerstown, MD/South Hagerstown) and two free throws each by Callahan, Glaser and Curtis McNeil (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes) to take a 29-17 lead heading into halftime.

 David Pearce hit a shot with one second remaining to bring the Garnet Tide within 10 after the first half.

 In the second half, Swarthmore hit the first two buckets before Callahan added to Gettysburg’s lead with a 3-pointer from the left side making it 32-23 at the 18:59 mark.

 The Garnet Tide trailed the Bullets by six, 38-32, with 14:16 left in the half, but McNeil pushed the lead back to nine with a 3-pointer from the top of the key at 13:58.

 Gettysburg outscored Swarthmore 28-19 in the final 8 minutes of the game and went on to win 69-51.

 McNeil, Natale and Schnebly each posted 11 points for the Bullets while Natale pulled down a season-high eight boards. Natale also dished out a game-high four assists and tied a career-high with four steals while Dami Oloruntoba (Glenn Dale, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt) tied a career-high with seven rebounds.

 For the Garnet Tide, Pearce led the team with 14 points while Matt Gustafson added 13 points and three rebounds. Lewis dished out three assists, grabbed six rebounds and contributed six points.

 Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday at Johns Hopkins.  Game time is 8 p.m.
