Glaser’s career day leads Bullets past Alvernia, 76-67

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Freshman David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep) nearly doubled his career high with 22 points to lead Gettysburg past Alvernia 76-67 in non-conference men’s basketball action on Thursday.

Glaser, averaging exactly two points in his previous four games, connected on 8 of 13 shots from the field and also added four steals and four assists as the Bullets (10-3) shot 56 percent from the field and halted the Crusaders eight-game winning streak.

Terence Callahan (Bay Shore, NY/St. Anthony’s) chipped in with 16 points while Jim Natale (Washington Crossing, PA/Council Rock) went 6-for-7 from the floor to finish with 15.  Curtis McNeil (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes) added 11 in the win, Gettysburg’s fifth straight against Alvernia.

Ray Strickland scored 15 of his team-high 21 points after halftime for the Crusaders (9-2) while Tillman Sims posted a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Back home after a two-game, five-day trip to California, the Bullets watched an early 11-point lead evaporate into a halftime tie before keeping Alvernia at bay with a 67-percent shooting performance in the second half.

The teams traded baskets three times in the first 4:14 of the second half before John Schnebly (Hagerstown, MD/South Hagerstown) put Gettysburg on top for good at 41-38 with his lone 3-pointer of the night.

Glaser followed with the second three of his young collegiate career and a McNeil layup pushed the lead to 50-42 with 10:39 left.

Keyed by Strickland and Sims, the Crusaders fought back to within a point at 59-58, but Glaser was fouled putting back his own blocked shot and converted the free throw to restore Gettysburg’s two-possession lead.

Strickland drilled a three on Alvernia’s next trip to again pull within one, but Natale swished two free throws and McNeil followed on the next trip by knocking down a three of his own to make it 67-61 with 2:13 remaining.

Brad Merriweather made 1 of 2 free throws to make it a five-point game, but Gettysburg held the Crusaders scoreless on their next three possessions while scoring the game’s next five points to seal the win.

Following a slow start for both teams, Gettysburg built a 23-12 lead thanks to eight points from Callahan.

Alvernia answered with a 12-0 run over the next 4 minutes, 38 seconds to take its only lead of the game at 24-23 on a pair of Strickland free throws with 5:57 left before halftime.

Schnebly missed his first career double-double by two points, pulling down a career-high 10 rebounds to go with his eight points and a career-high five assists.

Chris Alba and Byu-Deen Twyman also hit double digits for the Crusaders with 10 points each.

Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday at Muhlenberg.  Game time is 8 p.m.
