Darling scores 20 points to help Johns Hopkins fly by Gettysburg, 88-45

BALTIMORE, Md. - Kathy Darling scored a game-high 20 points to lead Johns Hopkins past Gettysburg 88-45 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Wednesday.

Darling was 8-for-10 from the floor in the game and pulled down eight rebounds for the Blue Jays. Trista Snyder added 12 points and five rebounds in a winner effort.

Dana Bear (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale Catholic) was the only Bullets' player in double figures with 13 points. Jen Nolan (Germantown, MD/Seneca Valley) chipped in nine points, including 2-for-4 from behind the arc in a losing effort.

Gettysburg was no match for the Blue Jays (17-3, 8-1 CC) as Johns Hopkins jumped out to an early double-digit lead and cruised to its eighth conference victory of the season.

The Bullets (10-10, 6-5 CC) were able to grab a quick 4-2 lead at the 18:04 mark, but that would be the only lead Gettysburg would have in the game.

The Blue Jays' Darling started the contest with a baseline jumper before Elizabeth Ross (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew's School), who scored all of her seven points in the first half, hit back-to-back baskets to give the Bullets a 4-2 lead.

Johns Hopkins responded with a 21-6 run over the next eight minutes to give the Blue Jays a double-digit lead at 23-10.

Sydner gave the Blue Jays the lead for good hitting a 3-pointer to make the score 5-4 with 17:14 left in the half. Ashanna Randall, who recorded nine points in the game, made 3 of 4 free throws and then hit a layup to give Johns Hopkins a 10-4 lead with 15:20 remaining in the half.

Bear stopped the 8-0 run with a layup to cut the deficit to 10-6.

Darling and Snyder each hit a basket before Bear sank another layup to make the score 14-8 at the 13:41 mark.

Darling and Kelly Rumsey continued the Blue Jays' hot shooting with jumpers to give Johns Hopkins a double digits lead at 18-8.

Steph Drevna (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic), Gettysburg's leading scorer on the year, scored her only points of the game off a jumper at 12:01 remaining in the half to cut the lead to 18-10.

Heidi Sumser hit a trey before Darling capped the run with a jumper to give the Blue Jays a 23-10 lead at the 9:23 mark.

Johns Hopkins went into halftime with a 45-24 lead and continued their hot shooting in the second half outscoring the Bullets 43-21. The Blue Jays shot 52.5 percent (32-for-61) in the game and also shot 50 percent (7-for-14) from behind the 3-point line.

The Johns Hopkins' defense held Gettysburg to 22.9 percent (16-for-70) from the floor in the game.

The Bullets return to action on Friday when they host Wilson College in the first round of the seventh annual Gettysburg Invitational. Tip-off is 8 p.m. In the other first round game, Mt. Aloysius plays Penn State-Altoona with a 6 p.m. tip-off.
