Drevna leads Bullets to 62-59 victory over York (Pa.) in consolation final of Days Inn tournament; Cohen leads Bethany to first championship, 68-55

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Steph Drevna (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) scored a career-high 25 points to lift Gettysburg over York (Pa.) 62-59 in the consolation game at the 12th Annual Days Inn Women's Basketball Tournament on Saturday.

Drevna, who recorded 12 points in the first round loss to Bethany on Friday, hit 9 of 16 shots on the night and converted 5 of 6 from the free-line to help the Bullets break a three-game losing skid. The senior needs three points to pass Steph Dravis (966, 1994-98) for seventh place on the program's all-time scoring list.

The Bison got 18 points from Kiki Cohen to lead Bethany past Gwynedd-Mercy 68-55 in the championship game.

Gettysburg had a lead as big as eight points with 7:15 left in the game, but the Spartans battled back with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to one at 54-53 with 5:26 remaining.

Mandy Crabbs ignited to the run with a layup followed by two free throws by Heather Kessler. Crabbs made the front end of two free throws and Kellie Flynn capped the run with a jumper.

The Bullets stopped the run when Dana Bear (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale Catholic) made a layup to give Gettysburg a three-point advantage.

Freshman Emily Falk (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe down the stretch to give the Bullets a 60-55 lead at 2:06 left in the game.

Kessler and Crabbs each hit two free throws a piece to cut the lead to 60-59, but with :15 remaining Bear hit both free throws and Gettysburg went away with the 62-59 victory.

In the first half, both teams battled back and forth trading baskets for the first 12 minutes of the game. With the score 23-all, Crabbs gave York a two-point lead with a jumper at the 6:05 mark, which would be the last time the Spartans would have the lead.

Drevna, an all-tournament selection, hit the back end of two free throws and Falk did the same to tie the score at 25-all.

Jay Hodge (Silver Spring, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) put the Bullets ahead for good hitting a layup with 4:46 remaining in the first half. Bear made a layup and a 3-pointer to force the Spartans to call a timeout.

After the timeout, Catherine Elliot and Flynn each hit a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 32-30.

Bear and Drevna stopped the Spartans' modest run with a pair of free throws of their own to go into halftime with a 36-30 lead.

Bear, who scored 21 points in the opening round, added 14 points against York. Elizabeth Ross (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew's) led the team with a career-high 23 points yesterday, chipped in eight points and career-high 16 boards.

Flynn led York with 22 points to be named to the all-tournament team. Crabbs backed up her 10 point, eight-rebound performance in the opening round loss to Gwynedd-Mercy with 11 points and 11 rebounds in the consolation finals. Kessler chipped in 11 points in the losing effort.

In the championship game, Bethany jumped out to a quick 10-6 lead, but Gwynedd-Mercy responded with a 9-2 run to take a 15-12 lead with 13:07 left in the first half.

Tournament MVP Kelley Richardson sparked the Bison comeback with a layup and a free throw. Katie Hardie knocked down a jumper to give Bethany a two-point lead at 17-15. Katie Tetzlaw increased the lead with a jumper. Tara Townsend stopped the run making the first of two free throws.

After a Bison timeout, all-tournament selection Cohen, hit the first of her four 3-pointers to give Bethany a 22-16 lead.

The Griffins' Colleen Carr and Bison Nicole Naccarato traded jumpers before Cohen and Naccarato each hit a bucket to give Bethany a 10-point advantage. The Bison never looked back on their way to their first Days Inn Tournament championship in their first appearance.

Richardson, who lead Bethany to the championship game with 30 points and 17 rebounds in the first round 82-74 victory over host Gettysburg, recorded 14 points and eight rebounds in the championship game. Hardie chipped in a double-double with 15 points and 11 defensive rebounds.

All-tournament selection, Mary Anne Wade led Gwynedd-Mercy with 21 points despite shooting 7-for-24 from the floor.

The Bison improved to 10-3 on the year, while Gwynedd-Mercy fell to 7-3. The Bullets improved to 7-5, while the Spartans dropped to 6-5 on the season.

Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Centennial Conference foe Muhlenberg. Tip-off is 6 p.m.
