Franklin & Marshall scores in double overtime to defeat Gettysburg, 2-1

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Stephen Schneider scored the game-winner with 58 seconds remaining in the second overtime period to lead Franklin & Marshall past third-ranked Gettysburg in Centennial Conference (CC) men's soccer action on Saturday.

Schneider netted his team-leading fourth goal of the season to give the Diplomats (7-8, 6-1 CC) their first victory over the Bullets (11-2-2, 5-1 CC) since 1987.

Forrest Watson assisted on the game-winner for his third assist of the year. Chris Milano made five saves in the contest, including stopping a penalty kick with three minutes remaining in regulation.

Senior James Miller (Redlands, CA/Redlands) notched his first goal of the season and second of his career. James Bealer (Darien, CT/Darien) recorded his second assist of the season.

After a scoreless first half, Gettysburg grabbed a 1-0 lead, but Franklin & Marshall tied the game at 1 with 4:03 remaining in regulation before winning in the final minute of the second overtime.

Miller headed the goal into the left netting off a Bealer corner-kick serve in the 60th minute to give the Bullets a 1-0 lead.

Gerald Stoltfus knotted the contest at 1 when he knocked in a Wallace Eisenhauer rebound off the left post in the 86th minute.

With 58 seconds remaining in the game, Schneider took the Watson pass from the right and found the twine for the victory.

The Diplomats outshot the Bullets 14-3 in the game, but Gettysburg missed several scoring opportunities.

Chris Borcik (Reisterstown, MD/Franklin) gave the Bullets their best scoring threat, but his penalty shot was stopped by a diving Milano with 2 minutes, 40 seconds remaining in regulation.

In the first overtime, Bealer and David Pone (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown) both had their shots saved by Milano in the 97th and 99th minute.

Twenty-six seconds into the second overtime, Milano nabbed another Bealer shot before Pone gave Gettysburg its final scoring opportunity, but missed wide in the 105th minute.

Steve Kopp (Upper Montclair, NJ/Montclair) recorded two stops in the contest.

The loss also marks the first time the Bullets have lost a game in which they score a goal in 36 contests. G

ettysburg returns to action on Sunday when the Bullets travel to Swarthmore. Game time is 2 p.m.
