BALTIMORE, Md. – Chad Tarabolous
scored the game-winner with 22 minutes remaining and added
another goal to lead Johns Hopkins past Gettysburg 6-4 in
Centennial Conference (CC) men’s soccer action on Wednesday.
Tarabolous tallied his conference-leading
20th and 21st goals of the season as the Blue Jays (14-2,
8-0 CC) moved a step closer to clinching home-field advantage
in the upcoming CC playoffs.
Michael Sarbaugh (Elizabethtown,
PA/Elizabethtown), Andrew Maynard (Reading,
PA/Exeter), Ryan Franks (Medford, NJ/Shawnee)
and Michael Bruno (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Twp.)
each tallied a goal apiece for the Bullets, who have dropped
three of their last four after rising to No. 3 in the national
rankings.
Gettysburg (12-3-2, 6-2 CC) and JHU
battled back-and-forth in a wild affair, but it was Johns
Hopkins took the victory after coming from behind twice.
After Rob Morrison tied
the game at 4 in the 61st minute, Tarabolous scored the game-winner
off a deflection in the 69th minute. Matt Weil
sealed the victory with a goal in the 85th minute.
The Bullets jumped out to a quick 2-0
lead. Sarbaugh scored unassisted off a scramble in front of
the net in the 12th minute and Maynard found the twine 4 minutes,
3 seconds later on a two-on-one break for a two-goal edge.
The Blue Jays scored three unanswered
goals to take a 3-2 halftime lead. Adam Hack
scored in the 19th minute off an indirect kick to cut the
deficit to 2-1.
Jeff Grosser tied the
game at 2 with a goal off a Greg Mangels assist
in the 23rd minute before Tarabolous scored into the right
netting off a Chris Brown assist in the 31st
minute.
Fourty-five seconds into the second
half, Franks scored to knot the game at 3 just seconds after
JHU goalie Gary Kane, Jr. made back-to-back
saves off of shots from Maynard and Malcolm Thomas (Albany,
NH/North Yarmouth Acad.).
Bruno gave Gettysburg a short-lived
4-3 advantage off a David Pone (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown)
assist in the 58th minute.
Johns Hopkins outshot the Bullets 23-9
on the game, but Gettysburg missed several scoring opportunities.
Michael Garea’s (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia)
shot was knocked over the net in the 13th minute by Kane and
James Bealer (Darien, CT/Darien) had a shot
stopped in the 33rd minute.
In the second half, Bullet leading
scorer Mike Bevilacqua (Marshfield, MA/Thayer Acad.)
missed a two-on-one scoring chance when Kane came away with
the save in the 51st minute. The Blue Jay keeper finished
with five saves on the night.
The loss marked the first time in Gettysburg’s
71-year history that the Bullets lost a game in which they
scored at least four goals.
Gettysburg returns to home on Saturday
to wrap-up the regular season against Dickinson. Game time
is 11 a.m.
