Thomas leads No. 9 Gettysburg past Haverford, 2-0

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Malcolm Thomas (Albany, NH/North Yarmouth Acad.) scored the game-winner and added an assist to lead ninth-ranked Gettysburg past Haverford 2-0 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's soccer action on Saturday.

Thomas netted his first goal of the season in the 86th minute and added an assist for a career-high three points.

Mike Bevilacqua (Marshfield, MA/Thayer Acad.), who scored the game-winning goal in the upset victory against No. 1 Messiah on Wednesday, also scored in the game. The current CC Player of the Week leads the team with 10 goals, including eight goals in his last five games.

Dan DiBruno kept the Fords (4-3-2, 0-2-2) in the game with eight saves. DiBruno came up big with back-to-back saves from Chris Borcik (Reisterstown, MD/Franklin) and David Pone (Bordentown, NH/Bordentown) in the 42nd minute. The senior also knocked away consecutive shots from James Bealer (Darien, CT/Darien) and Mike Leader (Hershey, PA/Hershey) in the 85th minute to maintain the scoreless tie.

DiBruno kept Haverford in the game for 85 minutes before the Bullets (9-0-2, 3-0 CC) broke through to take the lead and never looked back for their ninth victory of the year.

Bealer knocked a corner kick toward the twine when James Miller (Redlands, CA/Redlands) found Thomas for the score and the 1-0 lead in the 86th minute.

Fourty-one ticks later, Bevilacqua sealed the victory with a goal in his fifth consecutive contest off a Thomas assist.

The Fords did not manage a shot on goal and were outshot 17-2 in the game.

Haverford's Glenn Antkowiak missed high in the 47th minute and Garvey Camilien shot went wide in the 75th minute for the Ford's only scoring opportunities in the game.

Despite not making a save in the contest, Steve Kopp (Upper Montclair, NJ/Montclair) posted his sixth shutout of the season and has not allowed a goal in 559 consecutive minutes.

The Bullets return to action on Wednesday when they host McDaniel in CC action. Game time is 4 p.m.
