COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Senior Lauren Boyd
(Millersville, MD/Severna Park) dished out 53 assists,
21 digs, and 10 kills in two matches as Gettysburg fell to
Haverford 3-2 and defeated Ursinus 3-0 in Centennial Conference
(CC) volleyball action on Saturday in Collegeville.
The Fords (12-8, 5-2 CC) captured their first
win ever against the Bullets, ending an 11-game losing streak.
Boyd collected a team-high 47 assists, 19
digs and 10 kills against the Fords to record her first career
triple-double. Sophomore Nicole Barr (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck)
has been close to hitting a triple-double this season, collecting
nine kills, 13 digs and 12 assists in a 3-1 win over Lynn
on Sept. 2.
Barr knocked down 27 kills and 23 digs, including
a career-high 25 kills and 16 digs in the five-set loss to
Haverford.
In the decisive fourth game, the Fords jumped
out to an 18-10 lead. Boyd sealed the triple-double with her
10th kill of the game that put the Bullets within two at 25-27,
but Haverford capitalized on a Gettysburg error for their
final point and the victory, 30-28.
With the match tied at two, Gettysburg (10-11,
1-1 CC) opened the final game with a 6-2 run, before four
Bullet errors and a block by Jen Constantino
gave the Fords a 7-6 lead. The Bullets would knot the game
at 9 on a Barr kill, but Haverford captured the next six out
of eight 13 points to win the game 15-11 and hand Gettysburg
their first conference loss of the season.
The Fords won the opening game 30-26, but
the Bullets answered back and took game two 30-27.
Despite an early 10-1 run by Haverford in
game three, Gettysburg took the momentum from game two and
pulled ahead for good on two aces by Michelle Dorsch
(Frederick, MD/Governor Thomas Johnson). A kill from
Boyd sparked a 7-2 run to extend the Bullets advantage to
24-18, before two aces by Erica Rau (Oakland Park, FL/Pinecrest)
sealed the win for a 2-1 Gettysburg edge.
In the second game against Ursinus, freshman
Shannan Smith (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) posted
a career-high 31 assists and eight digs to lift the Bullets
past the Bears 3-0 to give Gettysburg their first conference
win of the season.
The Bullets never trailed in the 30-18 game-one
win and opened the second game with 6-2 lead en route to a
30-25 decision. Game three was tied at 11, before a kill by
Erin Barkdoll (Dover, PA/Dover) gave Gettysburg
the lead for good. Sophomore Jessica Cortese (Lancaster,
PA/Hempfield) served the final two points for a 30-20
victory.
Barkdoll and Joan Nagel (North Wales,
PA/North Penn) each knocked down seven kills while
Ali Hertell (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) collected
12 digs in the second match.
The Bullets return to action on Wednesday
at Dickinson. Match time is 7 p.m.
