Bealer scores early, defense closes door as No. 6 Bullets edge McDaniel, 1-0

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – James Bealer (Darien, CT/Darien) scored in the 10th minute and sixth-ranked Gettysburg made it stand up despite playing one man down for most of the second half, defeating McDaniel 1-0 in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s soccer action on Wednesday.

Playing with their highest national ranking in nine years, the Bullets (10-0-2, 4-0 CC) used five saves from Steve Kopp (Upper Montclair, NJ/Montclair) and a defense that has allowed only four goals all season to extend their program-record season-opening unbeaten streak to 12 games.

Malcolm Thomas (Albany, NH/North Yarmouth Acad.) assisted on the goal, giving him four points in the past two games. The senior midfielder scored the game-winner and added an assist in Gettysburg’s 2-0 win over Haverford on Saturday.

Ryan Tetteris put two of his team-high three shots on goal for McDaniel, but leading scorer Thomas Kane was held without a shot on the afternoon. Brent Kahuda made five saves in the Green Terror net.

In contrast to Saturday’s win against the Fords, the Bullets didn’t wait until the final minutes to get on the board.

Gettysburg carried the play in the opening minutes, nearly scoring in the first 90 seconds when Mike Bevilacqua’s (Marshfield, MA/Thayer Acad.) shot was knocked out of the goal mouth by a McDaniel defender.

Moments later, the Bullets broke through when Thomas gathered the ball in the midfield and found Bealer making a run down the center of the offensive zone. Bealer, starting in the midfield instead of at his usual role as a defender, finished low and to the right of a diving Kahuda to make it 1-0 with only 9:03 gone in the game.

From there, scoring opportunities were scarce on both sides.

Kahuda stopped Michael Sarbaugh (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown) in the 27th minute and recorded his other save of the half on Dave Monsour (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg) with just under 10 minutes left before the break.

McDaniel (5-4-2, 1-3-1 CC) didn’t manage a shot through the first 33 minutes, but its first two attempts forced Kopp to step up.

Jason Kuhns was stopped in the 34th minute before Timothy McCallum unloaded a point-blank blast from the right side of the 18 that Kopp knocked down just seconds later.

Kahuda halted an Andrew Maynard (Reading, PA/Exeter) shot in the opening moments of the second half, but Kopp answered with saves on Todd Knepper and Tetteris.

Minutes after Michael Bruno (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Twp.) left the game with his second yellow card, Kopp got a little help from his defense to maintain the shutout.

Matt Wolfe broke in on the right side and pushed an attempt past the sliding keeper, but defender Frank Ianni (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) cleared the ball out of harm’s way.

With the shutout, Kopp eclipsed a career high by extending his scoreless streak to 649 minutes without allowing a goal. Bealer’s goal was his second of the season and the fourth of his collegiate career.

With the win, Gettysburg set a program record for longest unbeaten streak to open a season (12), surpassing a 10-0-1 start in 1993.

The Bullets return to action on Saturday at Swarthmore. Game time is 12 p.m.
