Two freshmen lead Johns Hopkins past Gettysburg 3-0 to win CC title

Box Score

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Two freshmen scored three goals to lead Johns Hopkins to their first Centennial Conference (CC) championship since 1997 with a 3-0 victory against Gettysburg in women's soccer action on Sunday.

Johns Hopkins (14-5-2) defeated Franklin & Marshall on Saturday 2-1 in the conference semifinals to advance to the championship game. It was the third time the Blue Jays claimed the CC title and their first NCAA berth since 1998.

Brenda Bzak scored the game-winner in the 10th minute for her fourth goal of the season. Meg McIntosh, who scored two goals in a 3-2 double-overtime victory against the Bullets (11-7-2) on Tuesday, netted her team-leading eighth and ninth goals of the season.

Shannon O'Malley made 10 saves in the winning effort while Katie Simmons (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) made two stops for Gettysburg.

Johns Hopkins scored early in the first half and never looked back for their third consecutive victory against the Bullets on grass, including a 2-0 decision in last year's CC semifinals.

Bzak netted a goal from the right 20-yards out that cleared Simmons into the left netting nine minutes, 52 seconds into the contest.

McIntosh increased the Blue Jays lead after she scored on a two-on-one break into the left netting in the 73rd minute. McIntosh then sealed the victory with a goal off a Kathleen Turley assist in the 77th minute.

Gettysburg outshot Johns Hopkins 14-6, but missed several scoring opportunities in the game.

In the opening minutes of the contest, Lauren Melillo (Boalsburg, PA/Lewisburg) and Jenny Line (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle) had their shots saved by O'Malley.

Maggie Cirrito (Garden City, NJ/Garden City) had a two-on-one break, but missed wide left in the 38th minute.

With four seconds remaining in the first half, Katie Langmore's (Boxboro, MA/Acton-Boxboro) shot just went high over the cross bar.

Michele Friedmann's (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) shot was saved in the 54th minute and then gave the Bullets their final scoring chance, but O'Malley came away with the save in the 85th minute.

Gettysburg, who ranked as high as 16th in the NSCAA/adidias Top 25 poll, finishes the season 11-7-2.
