Dickinson heads game-winner in overtime to defeat Gettysburg, 1-0

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Ricky Gunnell netted the game-winning goal in overtime to lead Dickinson past Gettysburg 1-0 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's soccer action on Saturday.

Gunnell scored his first collegiate goal in the 98th minute to help the Red Devils (7-7-1, 3-3-1 CC) end a five-game losing streak against the Bullets (12-4-2, 6-3 CC). Fellow freshman Andy Stemplewicz made six saves for his third shutout of the season.

Steve Kopp (Upper Montclair, NJ/Montclair) made two stops for Gettysburg, who has lost four of its last five games after starting the season 11-0-2.

The Red Devils and Gettysburg battled through sloppy field conditions for 97 minutes before Dickinson found the twine to finish the season on a two-game winning streak and even its record to 7-7-1.

Gunnell and Kopp both went up for the ball in front of the net, but Gunnell got the advantage and headed in the game-winner seven minutes, 23 seconds into the overtime period.

The Bullets outshot the Red Devils 11-6, but missed several scoring opportunities in the contest.

Malcolm Thomas (Albany, NH/North Yarmouth Acad.) gave Gettysburg its first scoring threat 30 seconds into the game, but his shot was knocked away by a Dickinson defender.

Stemplewicz made saves on shots by Michael Bruno (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Twp.) and Michael Sarbaugh (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown) in the 22nd and 24th minutes, respectively.

Mike Bevilacqua (Marshfield, MA/Thayer Acad.) gave the Bullets their best scoring chances in the first half when he had a two-on-one break, but missed wide and then high in a span of 44 seconds.

Andrew Maynard (Reading, PA/Exeter) had shots in the 47th and 59th knocked away by Stemplewicz.

Stemplewicz made the stop on a Sarbaugh shot in the 78th minute before Maynard gave Gettysburg its last chance to score in the game, but missed high in the 94th minute.

The Bullets will be the No. 3 seed in the CC playoffs on Saturday. Gettysburg will play the loser of Saturday's Franklin & Marshall-Johns Hopkins contest. The winner of the Diplomats-Blue Jays game will host the two-day tournament and play the No. 4-seeded Muhlenberg.
