Bear leads Gettysburg to 60-57 victory against Elizabethtown in Marymount Tip-off Tournament

ARLINGTON, Va. – Dana Bear (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale Catholic) tallied 20 points to lead Gettysburg past Elizabethtown 60-57 in the second round of the Marymount Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday.

 Bear, who led the Bullets (1-1) with 15 points in a 90-56 loss to King’s on Friday, went 6-for-13 from the field, including 5-of-6 from 3-point range.

 Freshman Jen Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park Country) scored 18 points against the Blue Jays (0-2) after recording 10 points in her collegiate debut against the Lady Monarchs on Friday. Jay Hodge (Silver Spring, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) hauled in a game-high 16 rebounds in the winning effort.

 Cherrissa McCoy led Elizabethtown with 18 points while Cristin Braun chipped in 11 points in the losing effort.

 The two teams battled back and forth before Gettysburg went ahead for good with five minutes remaining in the game for its first victory of the season.

 After McCoy erased a seven-point deficit with her third 3-pointer in less than two minutes, the Bullets scored five of the final seven points to end the game.

 Jamie Marshall (Pottsville, PA/Nativity B.V.M.) ended the Blue Jays’ 13-6 run with a jumper with 5:01 remaining to make it 57-55.

 Jenny Roberts made one of two free throws before Bengel increased the Gettysburg lead to 59-56 with 2:22 left.

 Bear and McCoy traded free throws, but the Blue Jays would come no closer. McCoy and Dana Voit both missed from behind the arc with a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds.

 Fueled by eight points from Bear and four from Bengel, the Bullets jumped out to a 12-6 lead five minutes into the game.
 Elizabethtown answered to take a 21-16 lead, but Gettysburg ended the half on a 13-5 run.

 Bear hit two free throws and Elizabeth Ross (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew's School) scored on a layup to cut the deficit to 21-20.

 After Braun knocked down a jumper, Bengel hit back-to-back jumpers to give the Bullets a 24-23 lead with 1 minute, 45 seconds remaining in the half.

 Amy Nawoczenski made both free throws and Kara Tehune hit a free throw to give the Blue Jays a 26-24 lead, but Bengel and Amy Tarbell (East Greenwich, RI/East Greenwich) scored on jumpers to regain the lead at 28-26 with 41 seconds left in the first half.

 Adrienne Simmons (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) converted on one of two free throws to give Gettysburg a 29-26 halftime lead.

  The Bullets return to action on Sunday against the winner of Saturday’s Bridgewater (Va.)-Sewanee contest. Tip-off is 11 a.m.
