TOWSON, Md. – Thabo Letsebe,
Lafayette Melton and Jonathan Garritt
each scored a team-high 17 points to lead Goucher past Gettysburg
78-69 in non-conference men’s basketball action on Saturday.
Letsebe scored 15 of his 17 in the decisive
first half and added a team-high six rebounds to help the
Gophers (2-2) snap a two-game losing streak and improve to
6-1 all-time against the Bullets (2-2). Goucher shot 58 percent
from the floor on the night and was also able to take advantage
of 29 Gettysburg turnovers.
David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern
Prep) tossed in a game-high 28 points for the Bullets,
the sophomore’s second consecutive 28-point effort. Glaser,
who hit 10 of 16 shots from the floor and all eight free throws,
is averaging 25.8 points per game in the season’s first four
games.
Reggie Davis (Longwood, FL/William
Penn Charter [PA]) added a career-high 10 points in
the loss while Dami Oloruntoba (Glenn Dale, MD/Eleanor
Roosevelt) chipped in with seven points and six rebounds.
Goucher never trailed after Melton’s
turnaround layup made it 10-8, using a 23-8 in the final 7
minutes, 30 seconds of the first half to take a 16-point lead
into the locker room.
Kyle McGlensey (West Chester, PA/West
Chester East), who finished with a season-best eight
points, pulled Gettysburg within 18-17 at the 7:51 mark of
the first half before the Gophers went to work.
Letsebe scored on a baby hook and converted
1 of 2 free throws before Garritt and Trevor Quinn
scored on back-to-back layups to cap a quick 7-0 burst that
made it 25-17. Letsebe scored on a transition layup before
Glaser stuck a pull-up jumper in the lane to pull the Bullets
within 27-21.
On Goucher’s next trip, Logan Herring
scored on a put-back layup to open an 8-0 run that pushed
the lead into double digits at 35-21 with 2:29 left in the
half. After two Glaser free throws, Pierre Jones
knocked down a turnaround jumper and Letsebe scored the last
of his 15 first-half points on a reverse layup to help the
Gophers take a 41-25 lead at the break.
For the half, Gettysburg managed just
16 shots while committing 18 turnovers. Goucher shot 20-for-32
(63 percent) from the floor in the opening half and racked
up 10 steals.
The Gophers didn’t let up after halftime,
storming to the first 12 points of the half to lead by 28
with 16:26 remaining.
Davis’ 3-point play cut the lead to 13
with 7:46 remaining, but Goucher was able to keep the Bullets
at arms length down the stretch en route to the win.
Garritt finished a perfect 7-for-7 from
the floor and also dished out five assists. Herring also hit
double digits for the Gophers with 10 points.
Gettysburg returns to action on Monday
at Messiah. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
