CARLISLE, Pa. – Drew Magyar kicked
a 23-yard field goal with 52 seconds remaining to lift Dickinson
over Gettysburg 17-14 in Centennial Conference (CC) football
action on Saturday.
Magyar, who missed a 25-yard field goal
attempt on the Red Devils’ first drive of the game, converted
when it mattered most to cap a 12-play, 72-yard drive and
help Dickinson (4-5, 2-3 CC) extend its unbeaten streak to
nine games (8-0-1) over the Bullets (4-5, 1-4 CC).
Red Devil linebacker Chuck Nesley
sealed the victory by intercepting Joe Gossweiler (Florham
Park, NJ/Hanover Park) at the Dickinson 42 with 28
seconds left.
Antonio Tiberi carried
12 times for a team-high 111 yards while backup quarterback
Jake Ramsey, who guided the winning drive, rushed
for 79 yards and scored on a seven-yard run.
Gossweiler finished with 25 carries for
a career-high 158 of Gettysburg’s 299 rushing yards on the
day and scored his fifth touchdown of the season on a one-yard
run in the second quarter. Fullback Mike Schwalb (Bernardsville,
NJ/Pingry School) also carried the offensive load,
rushing 24 times for 95 yards and one touchdown as the Bullets
were denied in their first bid for the program’s 500th all-time
victory.
After a first half that featured four
touchdowns and 376 combined yards of total offense, neither
team was able to break the 14-all halftime deadlock until
the Red Devils put together the decisive march in the game’s
final minutes.
A 41-yard punt from Sam Shipley
(Rahway, NJ/Rahway) started Dickinson on its own 22
with 6:29 remaining. Ramsey got the drive off to a good start
with a 12-yard pass to fullback Matt Reisig
before keeping the ball on four of the next five plays to
move the Red Devils to the Gettysburg 47.
Facing a third-and-3, Tiberi broke loose
on a run inside the Bullet 10, only to have a holding call
bring the ball back to the 34. Unfazed, Reisig carried 19
yards to the Bullet 15 on the next play before Tiberi accounted
for five more yards on consecutive carries.
The Gettysburg defense held Reisig one
yard shy of a first down to set up a fourth-and-1 on the Bullet
6. The teams traded timeouts before Magyar split the uprights
to settle the affair.
After coming up empty on its first drive
of the game, Dickinson opened the scoring on its second possession.
Tiberi opened the eight-play, 77-yard
march with a 24-yard run and starting quarterback George
Gonzalez capped it with a 24-yard touchdown pass to
Gerald O’Hara to make it 7-0 with 5:36 left
in the first quarter.
The Bullets wasted little time in responding,
driving 70 yards on its next possession to tie the game at
7. Gentris Bryant (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Acad.)
keyed the march by taking an option pitch 18 yards to midfield
and Gossweiler capped the drive with a one-yard touchdown
dive on the first play of the second quarter.
The first of two interceptions by cornerback
Matt Zangrilli (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven)
set up Gettysburg’s second touchdown.
Zangrilli picked off a Gonzalez pass
to set the Bullets up at the Red Devil 45. Schwalb ripped
off runs of 8 and 4 yards before Bryant followed with an 11-yard
carry to the Dickinson 22.
The drive appeared to stall at the 13,
but a pass interference call on fourth-and-1 gave Gettysburg
new life, and Schwalb made it count with a two-yard touchdown
run on the next play for a 14-7 lead with 10:06 left in the
first half.
Running on every play, the Red Devils
answered with a nine-play, 59-yard scoring drive to knot the
contest at 14.
Tiberi opened the march with an eight-yard
gain before Ramsey and Kevin Kozup combined
for 51 yards on eight consecutive carries, the last a seven-yard
touchdown run by Ramsey with 5:49 left before halftime.
Gettysburg rolled up 43 yards on each
of its first two drives of the second half, but a fumble ended
the first possession and the Bullets were forced to punt on
their next march.
Dickinson’s best chance to score before
the winning field goal was a 12-play, 47-yard drive that ended
when the Gettysburg defense halted Kozup on fourth-and-1 at
the Bullet 33.
Despite being held without a sack, conference
sack leader Beck Daniel (Coral Gables, FL/Coral Gables)
still managed to lead Gettysburg with eight solo tackles.
Zangrilli’s two interceptions gave him a team-best four picks
on the season.
Kozup finished with 11 carries for 43
yards while Bill Corcoran was credited with
a game-high 11 tackles (9 solo) for the Red Devils.
The victory allowed Dickinson to retain
possession of the Little Brown Bucket, the trophy that has
been presented to the annual winner in the series since 1938.
The Bullets, who still have the opportunity
to finish with a non-losing season for the first time since
1995, wrap up their 2002 campaign on Saturday at home against
Franklin & Marshall. Game time is 1 p.m.
