GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall defeated
Gettysburg 4-3 in penalty kicks to advance to the Centennial
Conference (CC) championship game on Saturday.
Dave Heller knocked in the
decisive penalty kick to help the Diplomats (8-9-1) defeat
the Bullets (12-4-3) for the second straight time this season.
With the victory, Franklin & Marshall will
play No. 1 seed and host Johns Hopkins, who also advanced
to the title game by defeating Muhlenberg 6-5 in penalty kicks.
The Diplomats took a 1-0 lead in the first
half, but Gettysburg answered to tie the game at 1 after the
intermission before the game was decided by penalty kicks.
Mike Bevilacqua (Marshfield, MA/Thayer
Acad.) had the opportunity to give the Bullets the
victory in penalty kicks with the scored tied at 3, but his
shot hit the left post and knocked out.
Stephen Schneider, who scored
the game-winner in the 2-1-overtime victory against Gettysburg
on Oct. 26, gave Franklin & Marshall a 4-3 advantage before
Mike Leader (Hershey, PA/Hershey) knotted the
score at 4.
After Todd Kehoe's penalty
shot was saved by Steve Kopp (Upper Montclair, NJ/Montclair),
Michael Bruno's (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Twp.)
missed another opportunity to give the Bullets the win when
his shot was stopped by Chris Milano.
After Heller found the twine to give the
Diplomats a 5-4 advantage, Milano made his fourth stop in
penalty kicks off the foot of David Pone (Bordentown,
NJ/Bordentown) to help Franklin & Marshall advance
in the CC tournament.
Peter Pryzbylkowski gave the
Diplomats a 1-0 lead when he scored on an open net in the
20th minute.
Chris Borcik (Reisterstown, MD/Franklin)
tied the game at 1 with his sixth goal off Bruno's second
assist of the year in the 72nd minute.
Gettysburg, who did not allow a shot in the
final 53 minutes, outshot Franklin & Marshall 13-3, but missed
several scoring opportunities in the game.
The Bullets best scoring chance came when
Pone served a corner kick in the middle where Malcolm
Thomas (Albany, NH/North Yarmouth Acad.) knocked the
ball toward the twine, but defender Steve Azarik
knocked it away with Milano out of position in the 62nd minute.
Thomas and Pone gave Gettysburg its final
chance to break the tie, but Milano stopped their shots in
the 88th and 90th minutes, respectively.
Pone had his shot nabbed by Milano and Michael
Garea (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) missed wide in the
final minutes of the first overtime.
Garea gave the Bullets their final scoring
threat, but Milano came up with the save with 21 seconds remaining
in the second overtime period and force penalty kicks for
advancement in the tournament.
Milano ended the game with six stops while
Kopp made one save on the day.
The Bullets, who ranked as high as third
in the NSCAA/adidas Top 25 poll, finished their season 12-4-3
after losing four of the last six games.
