Franklin & Marshall defeats Gettysburg 4-3 in penalty kicks to advance to CC championship game

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall defeated Gettysburg 4-3 in penalty kicks to advance to the Centennial Conference (CC) championship game on Saturday.

Dave Heller knocked in the decisive penalty kick to help the Diplomats (8-9-1) defeat the Bullets (12-4-3) for the second straight time this season.

With the victory, Franklin & Marshall will play No. 1 seed and host Johns Hopkins, who also advanced to the title game by defeating Muhlenberg 6-5 in penalty kicks.

The Diplomats took a 1-0 lead in the first half, but Gettysburg answered to tie the game at 1 after the intermission before the game was decided by penalty kicks.

Mike Bevilacqua (Marshfield, MA/Thayer Acad.) had the opportunity to give the Bullets the victory in penalty kicks with the scored tied at 3, but his shot hit the left post and knocked out.

Stephen Schneider, who scored the game-winner in the 2-1-overtime victory against Gettysburg on Oct. 26, gave Franklin & Marshall a 4-3 advantage before Mike Leader (Hershey, PA/Hershey) knotted the score at 4.

After Todd Kehoe's penalty shot was saved by Steve Kopp (Upper Montclair, NJ/Montclair), Michael Bruno's (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Twp.) missed another opportunity to give the Bullets the win when his shot was stopped by Chris Milano.

After Heller found the twine to give the Diplomats a 5-4 advantage, Milano made his fourth stop in penalty kicks off the foot of David Pone (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown) to help Franklin & Marshall advance in the CC tournament.

Peter Pryzbylkowski gave the Diplomats a 1-0 lead when he scored on an open net in the 20th minute.

Chris Borcik (Reisterstown, MD/Franklin) tied the game at 1 with his sixth goal off Bruno's second assist of the year in the 72nd minute.

Gettysburg, who did not allow a shot in the final 53 minutes, outshot Franklin & Marshall 13-3, but missed several scoring opportunities in the game.

The Bullets best scoring chance came when Pone served a corner kick in the middle where Malcolm Thomas (Albany, NH/North Yarmouth Acad.) knocked the ball toward the twine, but defender Steve Azarik knocked it away with Milano out of position in the 62nd minute.

Thomas and Pone gave Gettysburg its final chance to break the tie, but Milano stopped their shots in the 88th and 90th minutes, respectively.

Pone had his shot nabbed by Milano and Michael Garea (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) missed wide in the final minutes of the first overtime.

Garea gave the Bullets their final scoring threat, but Milano came up with the save with 21 seconds remaining in the second overtime period and force penalty kicks for advancement in the tournament.

Milano ended the game with six stops while Kopp made one save on the day.

The Bullets, who ranked as high as third in the NSCAA/adidas Top 25 poll, finished their season 12-4-3 after losing four of the last six games.
