BALTIMORE, Md. - Kathy Darling
scored 18 points and added nine rebounds to lead Johns Hopkins
past Gettysburg 66-52 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's
basketball action on Thursday.
Darling, who ranks second in the CC in scoring
with 20.2 points per game, went 9-for-13 from the floor to
lead all-scorers.
Ashanna Randall and Ashley
Felix each added 12 points in the winning effort.
Jen Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park
Country) led the Bullets (4-2, 2-1 CC) with her second
collegiate double-double, posting 12 points and 15 rebounds.
Jamie Marshall (Pottsville, PA/Nativity B.V.M)
chipped in 10 first half points.
The Blue Jays (5-1, 1-0 CC) took an early
lead before Gettysburg went ahead, but Johns Hopkins answered
and never looked back for its fifth victory of the year.
With the Bullets leading 28-26 with 2:50
remaining in the first half, the Blue Jays ended the half
and the start of the second half on a 16-0 run to grab a 42-28
advantage.
Alissa Burkholder started
the run with a jumper to tie the game at 28 with 2:37 left.
Ashley Shepler hit the Blue Jays first 3-pointer
of the game to give Johns Hopkins its first lead since 18-16
13:29 into the contest.
Randall converted two free throws before
Shepler hit a jumper to increase the lead, 35-28.
Randall ended the 12-0 first-half run with
a 3-point play after scoring on a layup and hitting the free
throw with 33 seconds remaining in the half.
Darling made two layups and Randall made
one to start the second half to increase the lead 48-28 4:11
into the second half.
In the second half, the Blue Jays took a
21-point lead with 6:11 remaining in the game, but the Bullets
went on a 13-2 run to cut the deficit, 64-52 with 52 seconds
on the clock. Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgertown
Visitation) made two 3-pointers in the run for Gettysburg.
Keyed by two treys from Dana Bear (Lansdale,
PA/Lansdale Catholic) and one from both Marshall and
Emily Falk (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs),
the Bullets went on a 15-8 run to take a 27-24 lead with 5:14
remaining in the half.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday
when the Bullets host Messiah. Game time is 2 p.m.
