GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Christina Vouroitis
tallied 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead Messiah past Gettysburg
63-45 in non-conference women's basketball action on Saturday.
Vourtoitis went 9-for-16 from the floor,
2-for-5 from behind the arc and 2-of-2 from the free throw
line. Kristin Sassaman added eight points and
a game-high seven assists in the winning effort.
Jay Hodge (Silver Spring, MD/St. Vincent
Palotti), who leads the Centennial Conference with
12.4 rebounds per game, posted her first double-double of
the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Emily Falk
(Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) added 12 points
for the Bullets (4-3).
Dana Bear (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale Catholic)
chipped in 11 points to tie Heidi Spera (1984-88) for 14th
on the program's all-time career points list with 737.
The two teams battled back-and-forth for
the first 9:28 before the Falcons (6-1) took the lead and
never looked back for their sixth victory of the year.
After Falk tied the game at 15, Messiah outscored
Gettysburg 19-7 to go into the intermission with a 12-point
lead, 34-22.
Marita Rydell knocked down
a 3-pointer with 10:32 remaining in the first half to put
the Falcons ahead for good.
Falk scored on a layup to cut the lead the
deficit 18-17 with 7:55 left, but Messiah went on a modest
5-0 run off a free throw from Rydell and two jumpers from
Kate Giusto in a span of 1 minute, 24 seconds.
Hodge ended the run with a jumper, but Vouriotis
made back-to-back jumpers to extend the Falcons lead to 27-19
with 3:24 remaining until halftime.
Bear knocked down a trey to cut the deficit
to five before Messiah ended the final 2:01 on a 7-0 spurt.
After Heidi Marks started the
run with a jumper and Vouriotis hit from behind the arc, Christy
Groves hit a jumper with four seconds remaining to
go into the break leading, 34-22.
Fueled by four points from Falk, the Bullets
scored 9 of the first 12 points in the second half to cut
the lead to six with 14:26 remaining, but Sassaman hit a 3-pointer
and Vouriotis scored on a layup to restore the double-digit
lead at 42-31 with 12:42 left.
In the first 10 minutes of the contest, there
were seven lead changes and four ties.
With the score knotted at 5, Falk gave Gettysburg
a 7-5 lead with a layup at 16:31, but Sassaman hit two free
throws to tie the game at 7 51 seconds later.
After Hodge helped the Bullets regain the
lead with a layup, Rydell knocked down a trey at the 14:33
mark.
Gettysburg answered with four unaswered points
to take its largest lead of the game at 13-10 off two free
throws from Bear and a layup from Jen Bengel (Timonium,
MD/Roland Park Country) with 13:18 on the clock. Vouriotis
scored the next five points to tie the game at 15.
The Bullets return to action on Dec. 29 against
Delaware Valley in the first round of the Marymount Tournament.
