Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Brian Lewis
scored a game-high 26 points and Keith Dinkins
added 23 in his first action since opening night to lead Mt.
Aloysius past Gettysburg 83-73 in non-conference men’s basketball
action on Saturday.
Lewis poured in 17 points, including
all three of his 3-pointers, in the decisive first half to
help the Mounties (3-6) snap a three-game losing streak and
win their first-ever meeting with the Bullets (5-5).
Dinkins, out with an injured hand since
scoring 25 points and adding 17 rebounds against Southern
Virginia on opening day, went 10-for-15 from the floor, hauled
in a team-best eight rebounds and blocked three shots in his
return. Charles Jackson also hit double digits
with 16 points for Mt. Aloysius, which shot 59 percent from
the field on the day.
Gettysburg’s Kyle Jakobe (Baltimore,
MD/McDonogh/Peddie [NJ]) led five players in double
figures with a career-best 15 points, all coming on a career-high
five 3-pointers. Dami Oloruntoba (Glenn Dale, MD/Eleanor
Roosevelt) posted his second career double-double
with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
It didn’t take long for the Mounties
to take control or for Dinkins to get back in the swing of
things.
After Jakobe opened the game with a 3-pointer,
Dinkins converted a 3-point play and Lewis canned a jumper
to put Mt. Aloysius ahead to stay at 5-3.
Lewis assisted on a Jackson layup on
the Mounties next trip down the floor before Dinkins converted
another 3-point play to make it 10-3. Lewis then hit 1 of
2 free throws and Dinkins knocked down a jumper to cap the
13-0 burst and make it 13-3 with 14:45 left in the first half.
An Oloruntoba free throw cut the lead
to 15-8, but a 3-pointer from Bill Ferguson
and two treys from Lewis fueled an 11-5 run that put Mt. Aloysius
ahead 26-13.
Jakobe then went from shooter to passer,
handing out three straight assists on layups by Brad
Billmeier (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) and Todd
Brady (Hancock, NH/ConVal), and a 3-pointer from Justin
Harrison (Washington, DC/St. John’s College) to pull
the Bullets within 26-20.
The Mounties answered by scoring seven
unanswered points in the next 51 seconds to restore their
double-digit lead. A final Lewis three with 49 seconds left
before the break gave Mt. Aloysius a 43-28 lead at halftime.
The visitors built the lead to as many
as 22 in the second half, taking a 61-39 advantage on a soaring
alley-oop dunk and put-back by Dinkins.
Gettysburg chipped away at the deficit
and pulled to within 72-62 on a pair of Oloruntoba free throws
with 3:43 remaining. The Bullets, however, failed to cash
in on a rare Mt. Aloysius scoring drought, going 2 minutes,
6 seconds without another point until Jakobe drilled a 3-pointer
to make it 74-65 with 1:37 left.
The Mounties went 7-for-10 from the free-throw
line over the final 1:17 to seal the victory.
Ryan Page (Silver Spring, MD/St.
John’s College) added 12 points for the Bullets while
Brady finished with 10 points and six rebounds. Harrison also
tallied a career-high 10 points.
Mt. Aloysius scored 21 points off of
10 Gettysburg turnovers in the first half and finished with
29 points off 18 turnovers.
The Bullets return to action on Saturday,
Jan. 4, 2003 against Frostburg St. at the Catholic University
Tournament. Game time is 2 p.m.
