Box Score
ARLINGTON, Va. - Jen Bengel (Timonium,
MD/Roland Park Country) picked a great time to make
her first collegiate 3-pointer.
With Gettysburg trailing 57-56, Bengel drained
her first two collegiate treys on back-to-back possessions
to lead the Bullets (6-3) past Marymount 70-59 in the championship
game of the Marymount December Classic on Monday.
Bengel was named Most Valuable Player for
the tournament after matching a career-high 20 points on 7-for-10
shooting from the floor and 4of 7 from the charity stripe
and added 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of her
career. The freshman also recorded 20 points against Bridgewater
in the Marymount Tip-off Tournament on Nov. 24.
Jay Hodge (Silver Spring, MD/St. Vincent
Pallotti), who led the Bullets past Delaware Valley
in the first round on Sunday with 18 points and 14 rebounds,
added 12 points and 15 rebounds for her third straight double-double
to earn a spot on the All-Tournament team.
Dana Bear (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale Catholic)
chipped in 17 points, including a season-high five 3-pointers.
Katie Jarvis and Ashlee
Courter each received an All-Tournament nod after
scoring 14 points apiece for the Saints, who made the NCAA
Final Four in 2002.
In a battle from behind the arc, the Bullets
(6-3) and Marymount (5-4) fought for the upperhand before
Gettysburg took the advantage late in the contest and never
looked back for their first Marymount December Tournament
championship.
With the Saints clinging to a 57-56 lead
with 4:14 remaining, Bengel knocked down consecutive 3-pointers
in a span of 38 seconds to give Gettysburg a 62-59 lead that
they would not relinquish.
Annetta Benjamin knocked down
a jumper with 2:29 left to cut the deficit to three points,
but the Saints would get no closer because Bengel, Hodge and
Jamie Marshall (Pottsville, PA/Nativity B.V.M)
went a combined 8-for-8 from the free throw line to seal the
victory.
With the Bullets trailing 31-28 at halftime,
Bear fueled the Gettysburg comeback with three treys and Hodge
added six points in the first 10 minutes of the second half
to take a 49-44 lead with 9:10 left in the contest.
Marymount controled most of the first half,
opening up as large as a seven-point lead, but had to rally
to go into halftime with a three-point lead.
After the Bullets grabbed their second lead
of the contest at 22-21 with an Elizabeth Ross (Chestertown,
MD/St. Andrew's School) layup, Benjamin and Jarvis
scored back-to-back buckets to regain a 25-22 lead with 3:51
left in the half.
Ross and Courter traded baskets before Bengel
drained a jumper to cut the deficit to 27-26 with 1:56 until
the intermission, but Jarvis hit both free throws and Benjamin
scored off a layup to increase the margin to five points.
Bengel answered with a layup with 13
seconds remaining in the half.
The Bullets return to action on Friday when
they host Westminster in the first round of the Days Inn Classic.
Game time is 8 p.m. Messiah and Grove City will battle in
the first game of the classic at 6 p.m.
