Bear gets Bullets back on winning track with 20 points to lead Gettysburg past Wilson in the first round of the Gettysburg Invitational, 85-58

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Dana Bear (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale Catholic) led four players in double figures with 20 points to help Gettysburg past Wilson 85-58 in the first round of the seventh-annual Gettysburg Invitational on Friday.

Jay Hodge (Silver Springs, MD/St. Vincent Palotti) recorded her nine double-double of the year with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Keriann Van Nostrand (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan Reg.) scored 11 points in her first start of the season, while Elizabeth Ross (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew's School) chipped in 10 points and five rebounds in the winning effort.

Doris Zimmerman led the Phoenix (4-13) with 27 points on 8-for-19 shooting and 11-for-14 from the free-throw line. Zimmerman, who leads women's Division III in rebounds per game, recorded six rebounds in the contest. Lisa Schroyer added 20 points - including three from behind the 3-point line- in a losing effort.

The Bullets (11-10) will play Penn State-Altoona in the championship game on Saturday at 4 p.m. after the Cougars (12-6) defeated Mt. Aloysius 66-62 in the other first-round match-up. Jillian Klinar, the current Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Player of the Week, led the Cougars with 28 points and 15 rebounds. Ginger Fanelli led the Mounties (9-8) with 19 points and 15 rebounds in a losing effort. Mt. Aloysius will play Wilson in the consolation game. Tip-off is 2 p.m.

Wilson was no match for Gettysburg early on. The Bullets jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first 1:39 of the game and built the advance to 21-5 with less than five minutes gone.

The Phoenix were able to cut the lead to 14 points with 7:35 left in the game, but could get no closer as Gettysburg cruised to victory.

The Bullets made the first five baskets of the game to jump out to an early 10-0 lead before Schroyer hit two free throws to put Wilson on the board.

Hodge started the Gettysburg run with the first two baskets of the game and scored six of the Bullets first 10 points.

Gettysburg then went on an 11-3 run keyed by 3-pointers from Bear and Van Nostrand to give the Bullets a 21-5 advantage.

The Phoenix were able to cut the lead to 11 points at 25-14 with 11:57 left in the half on a modest 7-2, but Gettysburg ended the half on a 23-14 run to go into the locker room with a 48-28 lead.

Cat Arnold (Hunington, VT/Mt. Mansfield Union)
scored a career-high five points, including her first collegiate trey with 10:33 remaining in the first half.

Adrienne Simmons (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) had six rebounds and five assists off the bench, while senior Jen Nolan (Germantown, MD/Seneca Valley) led the team with eight assists in a winning effort.

The Bullets shot 51.2 percent in the first half off 21-for-41 shooting and ended the game shooting 46.6 percent while holding Wilson to 37.8 percent for the game. Gettysburg scored 39 points off of 31 Phoenix turnovers.
