Boyle’s last-second three lifts Gettysburg over Ursinus, 67-66

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Kevin Boyle (Pennsburg, PA/Lansdale Catholic) drained the last of his career-high five 3-pointers with three seconds left to lift Gettysburg over Ursinus 67-66 in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s basketball action on Wednesday.

Boyle’s game-winner capped a furious comeback that saw the Bullets (18-5, 10-2 CC) rally from a six-point deficit in the game’s final 1:50.  The senior tied a career high with 19 points and added eight rebounds and three assists, helping the Gettysburg bench outscore its Ursinus counterparts 41-3 on the night.

With the win, the Bullets clinched a spot in the CC playoffs for the second straight season.  Gettysburg would earn the No. 1 seed in the CC West Division with a win at Dickinson on Saturday.

Dan Luciano led four players in double figures with 18 points and added 12 rebounds for the Bears, who nearly pulled off the upset by going on a 20-2 run in the second half.  Luciano’s double-double was his conference-leading 14th of the season.

Steve Erfle and Matt Tuzman added 14 points apiece in the loss.  Ursinus (8-14, 7-5 CC) committed 28 turnovers on the night, but stayed in the game by holding the Bullets to 36-percent shooting from the floor, 12 percent below Gettysburg’s conference-leading field-goal percentage.

The Bears entered the night having lost 8 of 9 road games this season while the Bullets had won 11 of 12 at Bream Gym in 2001-02.

Those numbers went out the window in the second half.

Trailing by 12 after Boyle’s third 3-pointer with 10:39 left, Ursinus went on a 20-2 run over the next 8 minutes, 49 seconds to take a 63-57 lead with 1:50 remaining.

After managing only one field goal during that stretch, the Bullets rallied to keep their home-court playoff hopes alive.

Boyle nailed his fourth triple of the night to cut the deficit to three.  Jim Natale (Washington Crossing, PA/Council Rock) took an intentional foul after picking off a Tuzman pass and converted 1-of-2 free throws to make it 63-61.

Terence Callahan (Bay Shore, NY/St. Anthony’s), who finished with 12 points and seven assists, was fouled on his drive to the basket and drained both free throws to tie the game at 63.

Ursinus missed a jumper on its next trip, but the Bullets turned the ball over on an offensive foul and Dennis Stanton hit both free throws to put the Bears up 65-63 with 49 ticks left.

Natale and Luciano traded single free throws to make it 66-64.

Boyle hauled in the rebound of Luciano’s miss on the second attempt, then kept the ball alive following a missed free throw by Brad Billmeier (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) and a Natale missed 3-pointer before swishing a deep trey from the left of the lane with three seconds left.

Stanton had the game’s final shot, but his desperation 3-pointer fell short at the buzzer.

Gettysburg used a 16-1 run to turn a three-point deficit into a 55-43 lead with 10:39 to play.

In addition to Boyle’s big night off the bench, fellow reserve Cody Bowers (Indiana, PA/Indiana) added nine first-half points and Billmeier finished with eight.

Stanton also hit double digits for the Bears with 13.

With a win at Dickinson on Saturday, the Bullets would host Ursinus in the CC semifinals next Wednesday.  A No .2 seed would put Gettysburg back on the road at Muhlenberg.

The Bullets, ranked fourth in the Middle Atlantic Region, tip off against the Red Devils at 4 p.m.
