McNeil bounces back to lead Bullets past Western Maryland, 84-65

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Curtis McNeil (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes) led five players in double figures with 23 points and Jim Natale (Washington Crossing, PA/Council Rock) posted his first career double-double to lead 23rd-ranked Gettysburg past Western Maryland 84-65 in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s basketball action on Saturday.

McNeil, held to a season-low five points in a 59-44 loss at Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday, returned to form by going 7-for-13 from the floor and knocking down four 3-pointers to help the Bullets (17-5, 9-2 CC) remain tied with F&M at the top of the CC West Division.

Natale scored 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting and hauled in his career high-tying 10th rebound on the final missed shot of the game.  Terence Callahan (Bay Shore, NY/St. Anthony’s) went 4-for-4 from behind the arc and finished with 16 points as Gettysburg shot 61 percent from the floor.

David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep) added 13 points and helped seal the victory by sparking a 13-0 Gettysburg run in the game’s final 5:06.

Jack Kowalik scored a team-high 19 points while Jon Pearson chipped in with 17 and five rebounds for Western Maryland, which cut a 23-point first-half lead to 71-65 with 5:24 remaining before being held scoreless down the stretch.

Behind a combined 21 points from McNeil and Glaser, Gettysburg overcame 12 turnovers to take a comfortable 39-23 lead into the half.

The Bullets never trailed after John Schnebly (Hagerstown, MD/South Hagerstown) hit two free throws and Glaser followed with a pair of baskets to make it 11-5.

Andrew Slye canned a jumper to pull Western Maryland within 15-10, but McNeil and Cody Bowers (Indiana, PA/Indiana) responded with five points each in a 20-2 run that gave the Bullets a 35-12 lead with 4:20 left before halftime.

The Green Terror closed the first half on an 11-4 run and cut the deficit to single digits when Teron Powell hit two free throws with 8:36 left.

A 10-2 Western Maryland run capped by a 3-pointer from Alan Hoyt cut the lead to 71-65, but Glaser answered on the Bullets’ next two possessions.

The freshman fed Natale on a backdoor layup on Gettysburg’s next trip down the floor, then stole the ball from Adam Scott and converted two free throws to restore the 10-point lead.

Kevin Boyle (Pennsburg, PA/Lansdale Catholic) hit one free throw before Callahan and Schnebly drilled 3-pointers to seal the win.

Natale scored on a layup at 1:03 to reach the 10-point mark, then hauled in two rebounds in the final 39 seconds to complete the double-double.

Bowers also reached double digits with 10 points for the Bullets, who knocked down 11 of 20 3-pointers on the night.

Powell and Hoyt finished with nine points apiece for Western Maryland.

Gettysburg, ranked third in the Middle Atlantic Region, returns to action on Wednesday at home against Ursinus.  Game time is 7:30 p.m.
