Ursinus downs Gettysburg in Centennial Conference opener, 16-11

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Seniors Erin Fitzgerald and Jaime Matty combined for nine goals and 13 points to lead eighth-ranked Ursinus past No. 9 Gettysburg 16-11 in Centennial Conference (CC) women’s lacrosse action on Saturday.

Fitzgerald, a first-team All-American in 2001, scored four of her game-high six goals during a 9-1 first-half run that helped the Bears (4-0, 3-0 CC) take command of the game and get an early leg up in the CC playoff race.

Matty netted a hat trick and added three assists in the win, while Emily Durkin also found the net three times and added one assist.

Becky Bucha (Waccabuc, NY/John Jay) led the Bullets (4-2, 0-1 CC) with three goals and five points, becoming the third player in program history to score 200 career points on her first goal of the day.

Amy Farrell (Ambler, PA/Upper Dublin) scored two goals and added two assists in the loss, her second consecutive four-point outing.

After falling behind early, Ursinus roared back and claimed its third straight win over the Bullets thanks to the tandem of Matty and Fitzgerald.

The defending CC champs trailed 3-0 after a cautious first 10 minutes, but Matty set up goals by Durkin and Diane Elia around a free-position tally from Sarah Ulmer to knot the game at 3 with 17:26 left in the half.

Fitzgerald and Farrell traded goals for a 4-4 deadlock halfway through the period, but Ursinus netted the next five goals – including four in a span of 3 minutes, 42 seconds – to take charge.

Matty scored unassisted at 16:14 to put the Bears ahead to stay and Aubrey Andre made it 6-4 with another unassisted marker at 21:34.

Fitzgerald scored again at 23:14 for a three-goal lead, then found the net two more times in a span of 11 seconds to make it 9-4.

Murphy snapped Gettysburg’s nearly 13-minute scoring drought with a free-position goal at 27:38, but Matty and Fitzgerald scored back-to-back goals in a span of 24 seconds to give Ursinus an 11-5 halftime lead.

In the second half, Gettysburg scrapped back to within 11-8, keyed by goals from Julika Blankenship (Crumpton, MD/Kent County), Murphy and Bucha, along with a defensive effort that held the Bears scoreless for the first 22:46 after the break.

Durkin, however, made it 12-8 off an assist from Elia with 7:14 left and the connection of Fitzgerald-to-Matty provided the backbreaker 16 seconds later.

Becca Mannion made nine saves for Ursinus, including a pair of big stops on Murphy and Anna Haugen (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) during the Bullets’ second-half comeback attempt.

Liz Borucki (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) finished with eight saves for Gettysburg. Haugen added two goals in the loss.

With 204 career points, Bucha is 29 behind Pam Williams (233 points from 1985-88) for second place on the program’s all-time list. Colleen Dunn (1993-96) is Gettysburg’s record-holder for career goals (230) and points (272).

Gettysburg returns to action on Thursday at Muhlenberg. Game time is 4 p.m.
