Murphy, Haugen lead Bullets over Muhlenberg, 15-4

Box Score

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Megan Murphy (Wilton, CT/Wilton) collected a game-high five points as 12th-ranked Gettysburg outshot Muhlenberg 50-11 en route to a 15-4 win in Centennial Conference (CC) women’s lacrosse action on Thursday.

Murphy, the team’s scoring lead with 32 points in her first seven games, scored twice in the decisive first half and tied a career high with three assists to help the Bullets cruise to their first CC victory of 2002.

Anna Haugen (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) netted her second hat trick of the season in the game’s first 18 minutes, helping the Bullets (5-2, 1-1 CC) build a 6-0 lead. Fellow senior attacker Becky Bucha (Waccabuc, NY/John Jay) scored twice to move into fourth place on the program’s all-time goal-scoring list.

The 11-goal margin could have been much worse if not for Mule goalie Diana Bleakley, who made an astounding 28 saves on the afternoon.

Sarah Bowman paced Muhlenberg (1-5, 0-3 CC) with three goals while Christa Carlstrand also found the net in the loss.

Haugen opened the scoring off a behind-the-net feed from Julika Blankenship (Crumpton, MD/Kent County) 2:25 into the game. Murphy followed with a free-position goal at 5:46, then set up Bucha for a 3-0 lead.

Haugen sandwiched a pair of unassisted goals around a marker from Casey Costello (Tiburon, CA/Santa Catalina School) for a six-goal Gettysburg lead before Carlstrand finished a free-position attempt to put the Mules on the scoreboard at the 20:06 mark.

Murphy answered with her second goal of the game to make it 7-1 at 26:16. Bowman scored the first of her three goals to pull the Mules within 7-2 at halftime, but the hosts would get no closer after the break.

Keyed by two goals from Kathryn Grassel (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills East), Gettysburg scored four of the first five goals at the start of the second half to build an 11-3 lead with 20:54 remaining.

Bowman completed her hat trick 21 seconds after Grassel’s second tally, but the Bullets found the net four more times in the final nine minutes, including the first career goal for Kathy Delauney (Lutherville, MD/Roland Park Country School) with 2:40 left.

At the opposite end of the Gettysburg goal-scoring list, Bucha’s second goal of the game was the 145th of her collegiate career, surpassing Amanda Corroon (144 from 1983-86) for fourth place all-time.

Led by five caused turnovers from Murphy, the Bullets caused a season-best 17 of Muhlenberg’s 32 turnovers on the afternoon and also set a season high with 48 ground balls.

Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at home against Swarthmore. Game time is 1 p.m.
