Bucha, Blankenship net hat tricks, Bullets cruise past Swarthmore, 15-4

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Becky Bucha (Waccabuc, NY/John Jay) and Julika Blankenship (Crumpton, MD/Kent County) combined for six goals and nine points to lead 12th-ranked Gettysburg past Swarthmore 15-4 in Centennial Conference (CC) women’s lacrosse action on Saturday.

Bucha netted her second hat trick of the season to move into a tie for third place on the program’s all-time goal-scoring list alongside former teammate Amy Stambaugh (148 from 1997-2000). The senior added two assists against the Garnet, bringing her team-leading total to 15 for the year.

Blankenship also found the net three times as the Bullets (6-2, 2-1 CC) used a 10-0 run across both halves to break open a close game and post their eighth straight victory against Swarthmore (2-2, 0-2 CC).

Amy Farrell (Ambler, PA/Upper Dublin) scored twice and added one assist, giving her 11 points in her last three games. The standout midfielder also corralled a team-high five draw controls and picked up six ground balls on the afternoon.

Defensively, Gettysburg held the Garnet to two goals in the game’s final 52 minutes, thanks to a season-high 13 saves from goalie Liz Borucki (Medford, NJ/Shawnee), who also made 13 stops against Ithaca on Mar. 13.

Mavis Biss netted two goals to lead the Swarthmore attack while Jennifer Hart made 11 saves while facing 44 Bullet shots.
After a tight first 15 minutes, Gettysburg used runs on each side of halftime to take charge.

Farrell scored unassisted at 8:08 to put the Bullets ahead for good at 3-2 and Bucha followed with her first goal just 1 minute, 33 seconds later.

Bucha set up Blankenship at 15:52 for a three-goal advantage, but Biss scored her second consecutive unassisted goal to pull the Garnet within 5-3.

Over the next 26 minutes, however, Gettysburg rattled off the game’s next 10 goals to put away the victory.

Bucha, Megan Murphy (Wilton, CT/Wilton) and Casey Costello (Tiburon, CA/Santa Catalina School) scored in the final 5:34 of the first half to give the Bullets an 8-3 lead at the break.

Bucha finished the hat trick off a Farrell feed just 22 seconds into the second half, then set up Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) 32 seconds after that to make it 10-3.

Farrell and Kathryn Grassel (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) scored 44 seconds apart for a nine-goal lead. Anna Haugen (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage), who, along with Bucha, fired off a team-high seven shots on the day, scored her second unassisted goal of the game at 41:48 and freshman Kathy Delauney (Lutherville, MD/Roland Park Country School) capped the run with her second collegiate goal in as many games at 47:03.

Mariam Levy broke Swarthmore’s scoring drought by finishing a solo run with 2:59 remaining.

Swarthmore led briefly in the game’s opening moments when Katie Tarr converted a free-position attempt at 1:17, the Garnet leading scorer’s only goal of the game.

Blankenship answered with a goal directly off Murphy’s draw control win 18 seconds later. Haugen made it 2-1 before Biss knotted the game at 2.

After setting season highs with 50 shots and 48 ground balls on Thursday at Muhlenberg, the Bullets nearly matched those totals with 44 shots and 44 ground balls on Saturday.

Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday, Apr. 3 at home against 13th-ranked Franklin & Marshall. Game time is 4 p.m.
