Box Score
CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Ric Bremer (Ridgefield, CT/John Jay [NY]) scored a game-high four goals and second-ranked Gettysburg used a 6-1 second-half run to defeat No. 3 Washington 10-7 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday.
Bremer picked up four of his five points during the decisive stretch, setting up Rich Sharp (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough Reg.) on the go-ahead goal with 12:40 left in the third quarter to help the Bullets (7-1, 2-0 CC) down the Shoremen (6-1, 0-1 CC) for the sixth straight time and even the all-time series at 10-10.
Jake Van Nostrand (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) added two goals and two assists in the win, which gave the four-time defending CC champions a leg up in the race for the top seed in this year's conference playoffs.
Fellow attackman Pete Milliman (Rochester, NY/Brighton) chipped in with a goal and two assists for Gettysburg, which posted its 30th consecutive regular-season CC victory. Goalie Tim McGinnis (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola-Blakefield) made 10 saves in the win.
Craig Rentch scored a team-high three goals while Eric Kuehn found the net twice for Washington, which fell for the first time in seven games this season.
Coming off an emotional 10-8 loss to top-ranked Middlebury on Wednesday, Gettysburg bounced back to stay on top of the conference picture.
Goals from Jon Fellows and Rentch staked the Shoremen to an early 2-0 lead, but Nick Purkat (Annandale, VA/W.T. Woodson) put the Bullets on the board 8:26 into the game and Gettysburg never trailed after Van Nostrand scored twice in a span of 48 seconds early in the second quarter to make it 3-2.
Down 4-3 at halftime, Washington pulled even four the last time when Stephen Berger set up Kuehn in the opening minute of the second half.
Sharp, who tallied his first collegiate hat trick in the loss to Middlebury, put the Bullets ahead to stay with 12:40 left in the third and Bremer scored off a Purkat feed less than two minutes later to take a 6-4 lead into the fourth quarter.
Gettysburg's John O'Bannon (Marshall, VA/Highland School) and Rentch traded unassisted goals to maintain the two-goal margin, but Bremer scored two more times around Milliman's lone marker of the game in a span of 4 minutes, 24 seconds to give the Bullets a 10-5 lead with 4:30 remaining.
Rentch and Kuehn scored goals 31 seconds apart to make it 10-7, but the Shoremen wouldn't beat McGinnis again in the game's final three minutes.
With his four-goal outing, Bremer moved ahead of Van Nostrand for the team goal-scoring lead (26 to 25) and jumped ahead of Earl Kight (116 goals from 1985-88) for seventh place on the program's all-time goals list. Bremer also moved into ninth place on the program's all-time points list (149) ahead of Jeff Barrette (148 from 1989-92) and former teammate Tommy Pearce (147 from 1998-2001).
Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday at home against Haverford. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
