Bucha nets hat trick as Bullets roll past Dickinson, 16-9; Cantele wins 100th game, becomes program’s all-time victories leader

Box Score

CARLISLE, Pa. – Becky Bucha (Waccabuc, NY/John Jay) scored a game-high three goals and five points to lead ninth-ranked Gettysburg over Dickinson 16-9 in Centennial Conference (CC) women’s lacrosse action on Wednesday.

The victory was the 100th career win for Bullet head coach Carol Cantele, making her the winningest coach in program history. Cantele, a 1983 Gettysburg graduate who played both lacrosse and field hockey, surpassed predecessor and mentor Lois Bowers, who won 99 games from 1976-92.

Bucha completed her hat trick in the game’s opening 22 minutes to help the Bullets (9-2, 5-1 CC) build a 9-0 lead and cruise to their fifth straight win.

Casey Costello (Tiburon, CA/Santa Catalina Sch.), Julika Blankenship (Crumpton, MD/Kent County), Megan Murphy (Wilton, CT/Wilton) and Quinn Dougherty (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) each chipped in with two goals in the milestone win. Dougherty’s goals were the first of her collegiate career.

Rachel Mowell netted a hat trick for Dickinson (0-8, 0-3 CC) while goalie Casey Pheiffer made nine saves.

The teams battled through eight scoreless minutes before Gettysburg got the ball rolling with four goals in a span of 1 minute, 36 seconds.

Murphy opened the scoring off a feed from Blankenship at 8:10 and Bucha converted a free-position shot moments later to make it 2-0.

Amy Farrell (Ambler, PA/Upper Dublin) scored her lone goal of the game directly off the ensuing draw control and Cassidy Zappacosta (Monkton, MD/Maryvale Prep) fed Bucha 18 seconds later for a 4-0 Bullet lead.

Goals from Murphy and Anna Haugen (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) in another span of just 18 seconds make it a six-goal edge with 16:54 left in the first half. Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) and Blankenship pushed the lead to 8-0 before Bucha capped the nine-goal run and her hat trick off a Lowe assist at 21:14.

Alison Dunn put the Red Devils on the scoreboard at 23:54, but Costello answered twice to make it 11-1.
Katie Naperkowski added the final goal of the first half with 1:20 remaining.

Dickinson cut the lead to 12-5 midway through the second half, but Zappacosta’s first collegiate goal and back-to-back markers from Dougherty re-established Gettysburg’s 10-goal lead.

Liz Borucki (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) made four saves while facing only 15 Red Devil shots.

In addition to her lacrosse achievements, Cantele also won a program-record 121 games in 10 seasons at the helm of the Bullets’ field hockey program before stepping down in February become Gettysburg’s senior women’s administrator and focus on lacrosse.

The Bullets return to action on Saturday at home against Bryn Mawr. Game time is 1 p.m.
