McGinnis, Van Nostrand lead Bullets over Salisbury, 12-8

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Tim McGinnis (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola-Blakefield) made a career-high 22 saves and Jake Van Nostrand (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) scored four times to lead second-ranked Gettysburg over No. 7 Salisbury 12-8 in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday.

McGinnis, among the nation's top ten in goals-against average and save percentage entering the game, recorded 11 stops in each half to help the Bullets (10-1) post their fourth straight victory and second in a row over the Sea Gulls (9-3).

Van Nostrand scored the go-ahead goal early in the third quarter and connected two more times during Gettysburg's decisive 7-3 run from late in the first half to early in the final period.

Kevin Smith (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh) chipped in with a pair of goals while six other Bullets found the net on the day.

Andy Arnold, Chris Phillips and Ryan Shiley each scored twice for Salisbury, which entered the day averaging 15.3 goals per game.

After scoring exactly one goal in the game's opening 28:57, Gettysburg pulled even at 3 with two goals in the final 1 minute, 3 seconds, then rode that momentum to a nine-goal second half.

Down 3-1, Sean McTernan (Cordlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) ripped home a drive from the top of the offensive zone with 1:03 remaining and Rich Sharp (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough) finished a spin move on the doorstep with 10.6 seconds left to knot things at the break.

Salisbury took its last lead when Cory O'Neil scored in the first two minutes of the second half, but, moments later, Van Nostrand and Smith teamed up twice to put the Bullets ahead to stay.

On the face-off following O'Neil's goal, Van Nostrand drove to the goal and dished to Smith, who blasted home a shot from the left side to tie the game at 4.

Fifty-eight seconds later, Van Nostrand found Smith behind the cage, and Smith circled and fired low past Sea Gull goalie Dan Korpon for a 5-4 lead with 11:49 left in the third quarter.

Pete Milliman (Rochester, NY/Brighton) blasted home a deep extra-man goal at 10:50 and Vinny Merlino (Rye, NY/Rye) tucked in a shot to the lower right-hand side Korpon to make it 7-5 after three.

Two goals from Van Nostrand in a span of 50 seconds gave Gettysburg a 10-6 cushion with 13:14 remaining.

Arnold answered with two goals 28 seconds apart to pull Salisbury within two, but Chris Baran (Newington, CT/Newington) and Wes Cadman (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) gave the Bullets breathing room by converting extra-man opportunities in the final 7:40.

While Gettysburg struggled to get its offense untracked in the first half, McGinnis kept his team in the game with a number of critical stops.

Phillips gave the Sea Gulls an early 1-0 lead, but McGinnis stopped Arnold twice on the doorstep midway through the first quarter before Van Nostrand finished a right side solo run to tie the game.

McGinnis stopped Mike Roberts point-blank with 4:15 left in the first half to keep the Salisbury lead at 3-1 and denied Kevin Gemmell midway through the third quarter to preserve the Bullets' 6-4 advantage.

The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the visiting team in this series and insured the Sea Gulls' first three-loss season since 1990 (11-4).

Cadman finished with a season-high three points while Nick Purkat (Annandale, VA/W.T. Woodson) dished out two assists for the first time in six games. Milliman's lone goal moved him into sixth place on the program's all-time list with 122 career goals, ahead of Tim DeMore (121 from 1992-95).

McGinnis' previous high for saves was 19 against Franklin & Marshall on Mar. 28, 2001.

Korpon recorded nine saves for Salisbury, which still leads the all-time series with Gettysburg, 10-4.

The Bullets return to action on Wednesday at Dickinson. Game time is 4 p.m.
