College of New Jersey uses late run to race past Gettysburg, 21-11

Box Score

EWING, N.J. – Megan McCall scored six goals to help second-ranked College of New Jersey close the game on an 11-1 run and cruise past No. 9 Gettysburg 21-11 in non-conference women’s lacrosse action on Sunday.

Carin Heller added all four of her goals – including the go-ahead score – during the decisive stretch that saw the Lions (8-0) turn a 10-all tie into an eight-goal lead in a span of 12 minutes, 26 seconds. Liz O’Connor also keyed the win with four goals and two assists.

Becky Bucha (Waccabuc, NY/John Jay) led the Bullets (10-3) with a hat trick and moved into second place on the program’s all-time points list (236). Goalie Liz Borucki (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) kept Gettysburg in the game by recording a career-high 19 saves while facing 55 shots.

With the game tied at 10 following a free-position goal from Bullet attacker Kathryn Grassel (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) at 37:28, TCNJ went to work.

Forty-six seconds after Grassel’s goal, Valerie Cherill converted a feed from Tara Prindible for the go-ahead tally, then set up the first of Heller’s four goals to make it 12-10 and force a Bullet timeout with 17:30 remaining.

Just 14 seconds after the timeout, however, Heller struck again for a three-goal lead before O’Connor and Janae Durkin found the net 11 seconds apart to make it 15-10 with 13:26 left.

Goals from McCall, Prindible and Heller in a span of 2 minutes, 16 seconds pushed the lead to 18-10 before Amy Farrell (Ambler, PA/Upper Dublin) snapped the run with an unassisted goal at 51:33.

Up until the Lions’ decisive run, neither team led by more than two goals in a high-energy, back-and-forth contest.

TCNJ jumped to an early 3-1 lead, but the landmark goal from Bucha and two from Anna Haugen (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) put Gettysburg ahead 4-3 with 21:53 left in the first half.

Farrell’s unassisted marker at 10:53 made it 5-4, but the Lions tallied three of the next four goals to take a 7-6 lead.
Bucha netted her second goal at 22:07 to knot the game at 7 heading into halftime.

The teams seesawed to ties at 8, 9 and 10 before TCNJ scored 11 of the game’s final 12 goals to seal the victory.

Megan Murphy (Wilton, CT/Wilton) finished with two goals and one assist for the Bullets while sister Kate Murphy (Wilton, CT/Wilton) spearheaded the defensive effort with a team-high six ground balls and five caused turnovers.

Borucki’s previous career high for saves was 15 stops against Swarthmore on Apr. 7, 2001.

Lion goalie Gemma Gannone made 12 saves in place of regular starter Jen Munday, who was sidelined due to illness.

Gettysburg returns to action on Tuesday at home against Western Maryland. Game time is 4 p.m.
