Murphy leads Bullets past Haverford in CC finale, 21-11

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Megan Murphy (Wilton, CT/Wilton) set career highs with six assists and nine points to lead ninth-ranked Gettysburg over Haverford 21-11 in Centennial Conference (CC) women’s lacrosse action on Saturday.

 Murphy, whose previous best performance was a seven-point outing against Mary Washington in the 2002 season opener, set up three goals in each half and also netted her sixth hat trick of the season as the Bullets (12-3, 8-1 CC) wrapped up their CC schedule with their eight straight conference win. Murphy leads the team with 41 goals and 66 points.

 Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) and Kathryn Grassel (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) each posted their second career hat tricks in the win. Lowe’s three-goal showing was her second in as many games.

 Mindy Walman scored a game-high four goals for the Fords (3-9, 2-5 CC) while Mary van Ogtrop chipped in with a hat trick. Kate Duffy made 11 saves on 44 shots.

 Gettysburg never trailed after Murphy set up Lowe’s second goal 8:47 into the game, a marker that made it 3-2 and touched off a 10-3 Bullet run through the rest of the half.

 Casey Costello (Tiburon, CA/Santa Catalina School) scored both of her goals in a six-minute span to push the lead to 7-3 midway through the half. The senior added two assists for a career-high four points on the afternoon.

  Murphy handed out her third assist of the day on Grassel’s second goal at 19:29, then watched Jess Segar (West Chester, PA/Villa Maria Acad.) post her first two-goal game in a span of three minutes, the final goal coming with one second left before halftime to make it 12-5.

 After the break, Murphy scored twice and dished out three more assists to finish with nine points. Grassel capped her first hat trick since the 2000 season with a goal at 49:35.

 Van Ogtrop netted the Fords’ first three goals of the second half, but the hosts could get no closer than 13-7 after the break. Walman capped Haverford’s scoring with three goals in the final 4 minutes, 11 seconds.

 Anna Haugen (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) finished with two goals and a season-high four points for the Bullets while Becky Bucha (Waccabuc, NY/John Jay) converted the last two of her team-high six shots and added one assist. Liz Borucki (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) made four saves in the win.

 Leigh James scored twice and added two assists for the Fords.

 Gettysburg wraps up its regular season on Wednesday at home against Goucher. Game time is 4 p.m.
