COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Anna Haugen (Bethpage,
NY/Bethpage) netted a game-high four goals to help
eighth-ranked Gettysburg defeat No. 6 Ursinus 10-7 in the
Centennial Conference (CC) women’s lacrosse championship game
on Sunday.
The victory gives the Bullets (15-3)
their second CC crown and second trip to the NCAA tournament
in the past three seasons. Gettysburg also performed
both feats in 2000.
The NCAA tournament field will be announced
on Sunday, May 5 while the opening round is slated for Wednesday,
May 8.
Haugen, who was held scoreless in the
Bullets’ 9-4 semifinal victory over Washington on Saturday,
found the back of the net a season-high four times to lead
Gettysburg to its first victory over the Bears (13-2) since
a 24-14 win in 2000. The win was only the Bullets’ fourth
victory in the 24-game all-time series.
Becky Bucha (Waccabuc, NY/John
Jay), who scored a team-high seven points against
Washington, scored three goals in the championship game to
key the victory. Sophomore goalie Liz Borucki (Medford,
NJ/Shawnee) made 12 saves – her highest total in the
past four games – to help Gettysburg slow down Ursinus’ high-powered
attack.
The Bullets were able to control the
tempo at both ends of the field thanks to a 12-5 advantage
in draw controls and a 32-15 edge in ground balls.
Julika Blankenship (Crumpton, MD/Kent
Co.) found the twine twice and Casey Costello
(Tiburon, CA/Santa Catalina School) added a goal and
an assist in the winning effort.
Aubrey Andre, Susan
Patton and Leigh Voigt each scored two
goals apiece for the Bears.
Gettysburg jumped out to a 4-0 lead and
used a smothering defense to play ahead the entire game.
Blankenship posted the first goal of
the game at the 1:48 mark and Bucha scored one minute later
off a Megan Murphy (Wilton, CT/Wilton) assist.
Bucha found the back of the net again at 6:47 and Blankenship
capped the Bullets’ four unanswered goals with her second
of the day on a free-position shot at 16:17.
Ursinus got on the scoreboard 18:15 into
the game when Voigt scored off an Erin Fitzgearld
feed, but Haugen and Costello increased the Gettysburg lead
to 7-1 with three unanswered goals. Haugen found the
twine in 1 minutes, 34 seconds before Costello, who scored
twice in the semifinals, connected at 27:39.
The Bears ended the half on a 2-0 run
with both goals coming from Patton to pull within 7-3 at the
break.
The two teams started the second half
scoreless in the first 13 minutes until Amy Farrell
(Ambler, PA/Upper Dublin) found Bucha to take an 8-3
lead at 43:48.
Ursinus scored on an Andre goal at 46:45,
but the Bullets answered with a Haugen goal 11 seconds later
to maintain a five-goal advantage.
The Bears cut the deficit to 9-6 on
goals from Fitzgearld and Andre, but Gettysburg sealed the
victory with Haugen’s fourth goal of the day off a Farrell
assist at 49:29.
Ursinus scored the final goal of the
game when Emily Durkin set up Voigt at 54:32.
The Bullets have won 11 out of 12 since
a 16-11 loss to the Bears in their CC opener back on Mar.
23 in Gettysburg.
In their only NCAA tournament appearance,
the Bullets defeated Drew 8-7 before falling to eventual national
champion College of New Jersey 16-7 in 2000.
