GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Christina DiTucci
(East Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) scored two
goals to lead Gettysburg past Mary Washington 2-1 in the season
opener for both teams on Friday.
DiTucci scored both goals for the Bullets
(1-0) and freshman Michele Friedmann (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing)
collected her first collegiate assist in the winning effort.
Jacqui Forsythe netted the
lone goal for the Eagles (0-1). Goalkeeper Mary Elizabeth
Fulco made six saves in the losing effort.
The two teams battled to a 1-1 standstill
for 83 minutes, until Gettysburg hit the game-winning goal.
After Andrea Lipkin (Easton, PA/Easton)
served the ball into the middle of the field from the right
side, DiTucci knocked in the game-winner off a Freidmann assist
in the 84th minute.
The Bullets got on board first when Katie
Ferraro (Westminster, CO/St. Mary's Acad.) was fouled
in the penalty box and DiTucci knocked in the ensuing penalty
kick into the right netting.
Mary Washington knotted the game at 1 in
the 36th minute when Forsythe scored on a rebound off a Jessica
Hewitt assist. Gettysburg missed two scoring opportunities
in the 87th minute when Friedmann had two straight shots saved
by Fulco.
Freshman Katie Simmons (Alamont, NY/Guilderland)
made two stops in her collegiate debut for the Bullets, including
a save on an Elise Fasick shot in the 90th minute
to seal the victory.
The Eagles will battle No. 6 William Smith
on Saturday at Gettysburg. Game time is 4:30 p.m. The Bullets
return to action on Sunday against the Herons at 2 p.m.
