Gettysburg battles No. 6 William Smith to scoreless final

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Despite numerous scoring opportunities by both teams, Gettysburg and sixth-ranked William Smith ended with a scoreless tie in the Gettysburg Women’s Soccer Classic on Sunday.

With the tie, the Bullets (1-0-1) win the Gettysburg Classic while the Herons (0-0-2), who tied Mary Washington 1-1 on Saturday, placed second after winning the event last season.

William Smith’s Leah Cornwell was named Most Valuable Player for the two games after making four saves in the standstill against Gettysburg.

Katie Simmons (Alamont, NY/Guilderland) made four saves for Gettysburg while Katie Langmore (Boxboro, MA/Acton-Boxboro) led both squads with four shots.

In a defensive struggle on a cold and wet afternoon, each team could not capitalize on several scoring opportunities.

Langmore gained an advantage on the Herons to face Cornwell one-on-one in the eighth minute, but missed high.

Simmons saved the William Smith’s first scoring threat off the foot of Jaime Janowich in the ninth minute.

The Bullets could not punch in a goal on back-to-back shots from Andrea Lipkin (Easton, PA/Easton) and Molly Bauer (Camp Hill, PA/Camp Hill) in the 36th minute.

Alyson Stachura gave the Herons another scoring opportunity in the 67th minute that Bullets netminder Simmons saved.

Cornwell stopped Michele Freidmann’s (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) shot in the 67th minute and Langmore missed high and wide in the 67th and 71st minute, respectively.

Each team missed a chance to score in the final minutes of regulation with both goalkeepers keeping the ball out of their nets.

Cornwell stopped Langmore’s shot in the at the 88:39 mark and Simmons grabbed Maria Paoff’s shot 18 second later to force overtime.

Each squad could only manage a shot each in the two 10-minute overtimes.

Simmons nabbed Christine Curry’s shot in the 104th minute while Cornwell knocked Ashley Froman’s (Glen Arm, MD/Loch Raven) over the cross bar with 15 seconds remaining in the first overtime.

Gettysburg returns to action on Friday at the Muhlenberg Classic when they face No. 8 Scranton. Game time is 2 p.m.
