Russell-to-Singh Connection Leads Hampden-Sydney Over Gettysburg, 37-22

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Mac Russell completed 20 of 31 passes for 229 yards and two touchdowns to help Hampden-Sydney improve to 2-0 for the first time in a decade with a 37-22 victory over Gettysburg in non-conference action on Saturday.

Russell connected on a 9-yard touchdown pass to Ben Dull and a 33-yard scoring strike to Cole Downer in the third quarter to seal the Tigers fifth straight win against the Bullets (1-1). Conrad Singh snared 10 passes for a team-high 108 yards and one touchdown while CW Clemmons led all rushers with 96 yards on 18 carries and scored on a 17-yard run in the second quarter.

Nick Nocar (Baltimore, MD/Gilman) scored on runs of 3 and 26 yards as Gettysburg rallied with 22 fourth-quarter points to set the final margin. Freshman Jesse Jeffers (Morristown, NJ/Morristown Beard) accounted for 120 yards from scrimmage, carrying six times for 51 yards and catching five passes for 69 yards despite seeing the bulk of his action after halftime.

Gentris Bryant (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Acad.) also found the end zone on a six-yard run for the Bullets, who were seeking their first 2-0 start since 1993.

After fumbles short-circuited its first two drives of the day, Hampden-Sydney cashed in Gettysburg's only miscue for the first seven of 30 unanswered points.

With just under five minutes gone, the Tigers took over at their own 33 after a Nocar fumble and marched to the Bullets 4 in six plays keyed by an 11-yard pass to Singh and a 35-yard catch-and-run by Clemmons.

Russell fired incomplete on first down before Chris Gould ran three straight times, diving in from the 1 on fourth-and-goal for a 7-0 Hampden-Sydney lead with 3:41 left in the first quarter.

Russell used his kicking leg to set up the Tigers' next touchdown.

Facing fourth-and-4 at midfield, the senior signal-caller knocked a quick-kick out of bounds at the Bullet 1. After holding Gettysburg to three-and-out, Hampden-Sydney took over at the Bullet 29 and Clemmons ripped off runs of 12 and 17 to crack the end zone and make it 13-0 with 7:38 left before halftime.

The Tigers drove 12 plays for 49 yards on their next drive before Doug Van Der Mallie converted a 28-yard field goal to make it 16-0.

While the Hampden-Sydney offense rolled up 233 yards in the first half, the Tiger defense allowed only 60 total yards and forced the Bullets to punt six times in the first 30 minutes.

Russell marched Hampden-Sydney 71 yards on its first possession of the third quarter, capping the drive with a nine-yard touchdown pass to Dull. The Tigers made it 30-0 when Russell found Downer for a 33-yard score with 2:52 left in the third.

Led by Jeffers and back-up quarterback Joe Gossweiler (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park), the Gettysburg offense came alive in the fourth quarter.

Gossweiler found Jeffers on receptions of 20, 16 and 10 yards to key an 11-play, 72-yard scoring drive early in the final frame. Nocar capped the march with a 3-yard run, the Bullets' first points in their last three home games dating back to the 2001 season.

Preston Williams answered for Hampden-Sydney with a 46-yard return on the ensuing kickoff and backup QB J.D. Ricca capped the six-play scoring drive with a 20-yard touchdown toss to Singh that made it 37-6.

Gossweiler started Gettysburg's next drive with runs of 6, 16 and 7 yards before Jeffers carried for 15 more to the Tiger 6. Bryant scored on the next play and the Bullets converted a two-point play to pull within 37-14.

Following a successful onsides kick, Gossweiler drove Gettysburg to the Tiger 26 before Nocar scored his second touchdown of the day on a sweep with 2:58 left to make it 37-20. Gossweiler scrambled for another successful two-point conversion to set the final margin.

Ryan Kulinski led the Hampton-Sydney defense with eight solo tackles, two sacks and one fumble recovery on the day. Ty LaFlame paced the Tigers with 11 total tackles (8 solo, 3 assists).

Gettysburg's Cliff Mason (Greenville, PA/Greenville) led all players with 16 tackles, including eight solo stops and one for loss. Gossweiler finished 5-of-10 for 64 yards while starter Derek Landi (Vineland, NJ/Vineland South) connected on 4 of 9 passes for 57 yards.

Nocar's two-touchdown performance was his first since catching two TD passes in the Bullets' last home game against Hampden-Sydney on Sept. 9, 2000.

The Tigers, who are 2-0 for the first time since 1992, are seeking their first 3-0 start since 1976 when they face Emory & Henry in two weeks.

Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday with its Centennial Conference opener at McDaniel (formerly Western Maryland). Game time is 1 p.m.
