No. 15 Gettysburg, York battle to scoreless final; Spartans snap 10-game losing streak to Bullets

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – York forward Jeremy Klunk fired off a game-high seven of his team’s 20 shots as the Spartans battled 15th-ranked Gettysburg to a 0-0 final in non-conference men’s soccer action on Wednesday.

Fellow forward Derek Cesarz put all three of his shots on goal to help York (3-2-2) post a 20-6 shot advantage and snap a 10-game losing streak against the Bullets. The Spartans’ last non-losing result in the all-time series was a 1-0 victory in 1991.

Gettysburg goalie Steve Kopp (Upper Montclair, NJ/Montclair) kept York off the board with three saves in each half and two more in the second overtime period. Mike Bevilacqua (Marshfield, MA/Thayer Acad.) led the Bullets (4-0-2) with two shots.

Kopp was sharp from the opening kick, sliding to make a save on Cesarz in the fifth minute and knocking a Klunk shot over the crossbar in the 17th minute.

Gettysburg turned the momentum midway through the half and almost cashed in its first shot of the game. Following a York foul in the 28th minute, James Bealer (Darien, CT/Darien) blistered a drive from 25 yards out, but Spartan goalie Michael Cook made a diving stop to keep the game scoreless.

Kopp returned the favor by stopping Dan May on the doorstep after a corner-kick scramble in the 33rd minute, then watched Scott McDowell sail a shot over the crossbar minutes later.

Cook closed the scoreless half with a sliding save on a breaking Bevilacqua just 3 minutes, 30 seconds before halftime.

Gettysburg recorded four of its six shots in the second half, but failed to put a single attempt on goal. Kopp stopped Mike Mannion in the 61st minute, then denied McDowell and Steve Davis in the final 11 minutes of regulation to force overtime.

York took the game’s only five shots of the extra periods in search of the golden goal, but Kopp made two saves on Cesarz in the final eight minutes – the second coming with 44 seconds left – to preserve the tie.

The Bullets’ best opportunity to win the game came on a goal-mouth scramble late in the first overtime that resulted in no shots.

Kopp’s eight-save performance was his second-best of the season behind a nine-save outing in Gettysburg’s 0-0 draw at then-No. 11 Mary Washington on Sept. 7.

Mannion finished with four shots for York while McDowell added three.

The Bullets return to action on Saturday when they open Centennial Conference play against Washington (Md.). Game time is 3 p.m.
