GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Mike Bevilacqua
(Marshfield, MA/Thayer Acad.) and David Pone
(Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown) each tallied a goal to
lead 15th-ranked Gettysburg past Washington (Md.) 2-0 in the
Centennial Conference (CC) opener for both teams on Saturday.
Bevilacqua scored the game-winner for his
third goal of the season while Pone notched his team-leading
fourth goal of the season.
Ryan Miller made four saves
for the Shoremen (3-2-1, 0-1 CC).
After a scoreless first half, the Bullets
(5-0-2, 1-0 CC) got on the scoreboard and never looked back
to win their first conference game of the season.
Bevilacqua, who led both teams with five
shots, netted the first goal of the game off a Michael
Garea (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) assist in the 60th
minute.
Pone sealed the Gettysburg victory finding
the twine in the 85th minute off a Michael Sarbaugh
(Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown).
The Bullets dominated Washington the entire
contest, outshooting the Shoremen 14-2.
Washington's best scoring chance came when
two Shoremen players and Gettysburg goalkeeper Steve
Kopp (Upper Montclair, NJ/Montclair) were battling
for the ball, but Kopp came up with the save off the foot
of Jaron Putmon in the 72nd minute.
Kopp also made the stop on David Dudick's
shot in the 89th minute to finish with two saves and earned
his fourth shutout of the season.
The Bullets return to action on Tuesday when
they host Susquehanna in non-conference action. Game time
is 4:30 p.m.
