Box Score vs. Messiah
Box Score vs. Villa Julie

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Jessica Cortese (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) tallied 17 of her 20 kills in a 3-2 loss to Messiah as Gettysburg split a pair of matches on the first day of the Battlefield Classic on Friday.

The Bullets (2-5) rebounded from the five-set defeat with a resounding 3-0 victory over Villa Julie to finish second in their pool. Erica Rau (Oakland Park, FL/Pine Crest) and Nicole Barr (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) combined for 12 kills and nine service aces against the Mustangs.

In the opener, Messiah rallied to snap a 12-match losing streak to the Bullets and post its first victory over Gettysburg since 1988.

Down 2-1 and with game four tied at 14, the Falcons scored 11 of the next 15 points to take a commanding 25-18 lead and cruise to the win. Senior setter Karen Sollenberger knocked down two kills to key a 5-0 burst that started the run. Amanda Hopkins closed the decisive stretch with a kill-and-block combination and served an ace to close out the set.

In game five, Messiah stormed out to an 11-1 lead, taking advantage of three kills and five Bullet attack errors. Gettysburg tallied the next three points following a timeout, but kills from Hopkins, Aimee Eshelman and Priscilla Chase pushed the Falcons within one point of the upset and a final Bullet attacking error gave Messiah the win.

Gettysburg took out its frustration on Villa Julie, winning the first game 30-12 and coming back from a late deficit to capture game two, 30-28. Powered by four of Barr’s six kills, the Bullets charged out to a 19-8 lead in game three and closed with five straight points to notch their second win of the season.

Senior setter Lauren Boyd (Millersville, MD/Severna Park) dished out 48 assists on the day, including 33 in the loss to Messiah. Barr led the team with 12 digs against the Falcons and five aces against Villa Julie.

Gettysburg returns to action tomorrow at the Battlefield Classic. The Bullets face Seton Hill on Saturday at 9 a.m. and Gallaudet at 1 p.m.
