Bevilacqua lifts Gettysburg past Marymount, 2-1

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Mike Bevilacqua (Marshfield, MA/Thayer Acad.) scored two goals to lead Gettysburg past Marymount 2-1 in the Mary Washington Classic on Sunday.

Bevilacqua gave the Bullets (3-0-1) an early lead off a penalty kick and then knocked in the game-winning goal to give Gettysburg its third victory of the season. The junior also scored two goals in a 2-0 victory at Susquehanna on Sept. 4, 2001.

Steve Kopp (Upper Montclair, NJ/Montclair), who made nine saves in the scoreless final against No. 11 Mary Washington on Saturday, made three stops against the Saints (0-5).

Navas Ricardo scored the lone goal for Marymount while Brian Craddock made six saves in the losing effort.

The two squads battled for 31 minutes before the Bullets took a 1-0 lead into the intermission. After the Saints knotted the game at 1, Gettysburg grabbed a one-goal advantage and held on for the victory.

After a Marymount foul, Bevilacqua gave the Bullets the 1-0 lead on a penalty kick in the 32nd minute.

The Saints struck back to tie the game at 1 when Ricardo scored off a David Newman assist 1:31 into the second period.

Bevilacqua then gave Gettysburg a 2-1 advantage when he found the twine off a Mike Leader (Hershey, PA/Hershey) assist in the 69th minute.

After Ricardo tied the game at 1-all, Marymount managed only four shots in the final 43 minutes of the game.

Kopp made saves on shots from Thomas Wasley and Justin Kessler in the 58th and 89th minute, respectively. Gary Climo had back-to-back shots blocked in the 60th minute.

Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday against Eastern. Game time is 3 p.m.
