Bullets stay perfect in CC with 58-48 win over Muhlenberg

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep) scored a game-high 23 points to help Gettysburg rally from a second-half deficit and defeat Muhlenberg 58-48 in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s basketball action on Wednesday.

Glaser, coming off a 26-point outing on Saturday, shot 7-for-10 from the floor, 7-for-8 from the line and matched a career-high with 10 rebounds for his second career double-double to help the Bullets (7-8, 3-0 CC) avoid their first four-game losing streak in five seasons.

Todd Brady (Hancock, NH/ConVal) scored six of his 13 points during Gettysburg’s decisive 16-0 second-half run and added six rebounds. Kyle Jakobe (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh/Peddie [NJ]) chipped in with seven points and eight of the Bullets’ season-high 49 boards.

The win, coupled with Franklin & Marshall’s 83-82 loss to Ursinus on Wednesday, leaves the Bullets alone in first place in the CC West Division heading into a Saturday showdown with the Diplomats (12-2, 2-1 CC) in Lancaster.

Toomey Anderson led Muhlenberg (6-6, 0-2 CC) with 15 points while Anthony Strachan added nine points, five rebounds and three assists.

Leading 25-19 at halftime despite shooting 8-for-29 (28 percent) from the floor, Gettysburg watched the Mules rally to take four-point lead in the final nine minutes before putting together a comeback of its own to secure the win.

A jumper in the lane by John Jemmott with 9:13 left gave Muhlenberg a 40-36 lead before the Bullets went to work.

Jakobe knocked down a 3-pointer from the right corner and Brady, with Ryan Page (Silver Spring, MD/St. John’s College [DC]) poised at the scorer’s table to replace him, made only the front end of a 1-and-1 free-throw situation to stay in the tie game.

The miss quickly proved to be a stroke of good fortune.

Brady stole the ball from Jemmott on the Mules’ next possession, then buried his only 3-pointer of the night to put Gettysburg ahead to stay at 43-40. The freshman then rebounded a missed trey from Raushan Person, leading to a Glaser field goal and a five-point lead.

Fate smiled again on the Bullets moments later. With Glaser forced to the sideline due to a bloody nose, Brad Billmeier (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) was hurried into the game and responded with a jumper and two assists – the first setting up a Brady layup – on Gettysburg’s next three possessions to push the lead to 51-40. Glaser returned to the game and hit 1 of 2 free throws to cap the run with 4:40 left.

Aaron Holden knocked down a jumper to pull Muhlenberg within 54-46 with 2:41 left, but the visitors would get no closer the rest of the way en route to the eighth straight regular-season loss by the visiting team in this series. The Mules were the last road team to triumph in the regular season, winning at Bream Gym in 1994-95.

Both teams struggled offensively through a sloppy first half, each starting the game shooting 1-for-9 from the floor and finishing a combined 17-for-61 (28 percent) in the opening 20 minutes. Glaser was the lone bright spot on either side, scoring 14 of his 23 points on 5-of-7 shooting while drilling two 3-pointers in 15 minutes.

With the win, the Bullets avoided their first four-game losing streak since the 1997-98 season. Glaser topped the 20-point mark for the sixth time this season is averaging 21.5 points in his last four games.

Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at 20th-ranked Franklin & Marshall. Game time is 7 p.m.
