GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Gwen Doyle
scored 13 points to lead Muhlenberg past Gettysburg 65-57
in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on
Wednesday.
Doyle hit two of the Mules four 3-pointers
in the game and went 3-for-4 from the free throw line. Susan
Marchiano added 12 points in the winning effort.
Jay Hodge (Silver Spring, MD/St. Vincent
Pallotti), the current CC Player of the Week, led
the Bullets (9-4, 2-2 CC) with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Hodge was 7-for-13 shooting from the floor and 2-of-3 from
the charity stripe. Jen Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland
Park Country) chipped in five points from the free
throw line and added a game-high 13 rebounds in the loss.
The two teams battled to seven ties and 14
lead changes before Muhlenberg (7-5, 3-0 CC) finally took
control late in the second half and never looked back for
their seventh victory of the year.
After Gettysburg reclaimed the lead at 51-50,
the Mules scored 15 of the final 21 points in the game to
become the first road team to win in the last six meetings
of the series.
Emily Falk (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling
Springs) put the Bullets ahead 51-50 with 5:10 left
in the contest before Becky Richmond knocked
down a jumper to put Muhlenberg ahead to stay.
Marchiano and Stephanie Coluccini
drained back-to-back jumpers to extend the Mules lead to 56-51
with 3:12 remaining.
Dana Bear (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale Catholic)
stopped the 6-0 run with a basket 22 seconds later. Marchiano
and Doyle each scored in the paint to increase the Muhlenberg
lead to seven points before Bear hit another jumper to cut
the deficit to 60-55 with 1:20 on the clock, but the Mules
went 5-for-6 from the free throw line to seal the victory.
Gettysburg jumped out to an eight-point advantage
at 38-30 with 17:34 left in the game after going on a 17-9
surge in a span of 7 minutes, 34 seconds.
With the score tied at 21 with 5:08 remaining
in the first half, Bengel converted a free throw and Katie
Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation) scored
on a layup to give the Bullets a three-point lead at 24-21
with 3:06 until intermission.
After Lindsday Tis brought
Muhlenberg back within one point, Hodge and Bengel went 4-of-4
from the charity stripe to give Gettysburg a 28-23 lead with
20 seconds left in the half before Marchino scored in the
paint to cut the deficit to three points. Fueled by six points
from Hodge, the Bullets grabbed a 38-30 lead 2:26 into the
second half.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday
at home against CC rival Franklin & Marshall. Tip-off is 1
p.m.
