GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Emily Falk (Boiling
Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) scored a career-high
20 points, helping Gettysburg comeback from a 14-point deficit
to defeat Franklin & Marshall 76-70 in Centennial Conference
(CC) women's basketball action on Saturday.
Falk went 5-for-6 shooting from the floor,
1-for-1 from behind the arc and hit a career-best 9-of-10
from the free throw line. The sophomore also grabbed six rebounds
and two steals.
Jay Hodge (Silver Spring, MD/St. Vincent
Pallotti) posted her sixth double-double of the year
with 17 points and 13 rebounds while Jen Bengel (Timonium,
MD/Roland Park Country) added 14 points and five rebounds
in the winning effort.
Courtney Tierney almost single-handedly
outscored the Bullets (10-4, 3-2 CC) in the first half with
21 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field, 4-for-4 from
3-point land and 3-of-3 from the charity stripe, but only
recorded seven points in the second half for a game-high 28.
Amy Abernathy chipped in 15 points and 12 rebounds
in the loss.
The Diplomats (9-4, 3-2 CC) jumped out to
a 14-point advantage before Gettysburg rallied to grab the
lead late in the contest and hold on for its 10th victory
of the season.
With Franklin & Marshall clinging to a 64-63
lead, Elizabeth Ross (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew's School)
gave the Bullets their first lead of the game at 65-64 with
6:21 left.
Abernathy and Jamie Drahos
each hit 1 of 2 from the free throw to restore the lead for
the Diplomats, but Hodge knocked down a jumper to give Gettysburg
a 67-66 advantage with 4:43 remaining.
After Tierney drained her fifth 3-pointer
to give Franklin & Marshall their final lead of the game at
69-67 with 3:42 remaining, the Bullets closed the contest
on a 9-1 run to end a three-game losing streak against the
Diplomats.
Hodge cut the deficit to one point after
hitting a free throw before Falk knocked down a pair of free
throws to give Gettysburg a 70-69 advantage with 1:36 left.
Maura Lentz made the back end
of two free throws to knot the game at 70, but Bengel hit
a jumper in the left corner off a Hodge assist to give the
Bullets the lead for good with 1:01 remaining. Falk hit 1
of 2 free throws and Bengel converted 3 of 4 to seal the victory.
The Diplomats took a 50-36 lead after Drahos
scored on a layup with 15:51 on the clock, Gettysburg went
on a 29-14 surge to tie the game at 65 at the 6:08 mark. Keyed
by six points apiece from Hodge and Jamie Marshall,
the Bullets went 7-for-11 shooting from the floor, 1-for-1
from behind the arc and 12-for-13 from the free throw during
the 9:43 span to tie the game at 65.
In the first half, Franklin & Marshall turned
14 Gettysburg turnovers into 27 points to grab a 36-26 halftime
lead while holding the Bullets to 28.6 percent shooting in
the first half.
After Dana Bear (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale
Catholic) cut the Diplomats lead to 8-6 with 14:46
left until the intermission, Tierney put Franklin & Marshall
on her back to score 21 of the team's final 28 first half
points.
Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday
at McDaniel. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
