McDaniel defeats Gettysburg 69-62 in CC action

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Jen Piccolomini scored 20 points to lead McDaniel past Gettysburg 69-62 in Centennial Conference (CC) women’s basketball action on Wednesday.

Piccolomini went 8-for-16 shooting from the floor and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. She also added seven rebounds and an assist. Jacqueline Pundt recorded nine points in the winning effort.

Jen Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park Country) scored 16 points and added eight rebounds. Elizabeth Ross (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew’s School) chipped in 13 points off the bench while Jay Hodge (Silver Spring, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) tallied eight points and 13 rebounds in the loss.

The Bullets (10-5, 3-3 CC) jumped out to an early lead before the Green Terror (11-3, 4-2 CC) answered to grab the advantage and held on for its sixth-consecutive victory against Gettysburg at Gill Gymnasium.

After the Bullets took a 31-27 lead after the intermission, McDaniel went on 8-0 run to take the lead for good at 35-31 with 14:55 remaining in the game.

Hodge and Emily Falk (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) combined for seven points to help Gettysburg retake the lead at 31-27 3:56 into the second half, but Brooke Weimer hit a jumper, Toby McIntire scored back-to-back buckets and Kris Brust knocked down a jumper in a span of 55 seconds handed the Green Terror a four-point advantage.

With McDaniel leading 39-38 with 12:25 left in the contest, Pundt fueled a Green Terror 10-2 run with six points to take a 49-40 lead with 9:40 on the clock.

The Bullets would not go down without a fight, rallying to score 13 of the next 20 points to cut the deficit to 56-55 with 5:07 remaining.

After Bengel started a modest 6-0 run on a basket off the glass with 9:20 ticks left, Hodge knocked down a jumper and Dana Bear (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale Catholic) converted two free throws to make the score 51-46.

Piccolomini stopped the run with basket at 7:52 before Ross hit the back end of two free throws. Kelly Cramp then drained a 3-pointer to give McDaniel a seven-point advantage, 54-47.

Ross and Bengel scored on back-to-back layups, but Brust answered with a jumper. Adrienne Simmons (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) knocked down two free throws and Ross hit a layup to cut the deficit to 56-55.

Piccolomini answered with six-straight points to increase the margin to 62-55 with 3:58 on the clock.

Bengel responded to Piccolomini’s run with a 5-0 run of her own to bring Gettysburg within two points at 64-62 at the 1:09 mark, but Piccolomini ended the Bullets comeback attempt with a jumper 14 seconds later.

In the first half, Gettysburg went on a 15-2 surge to take a 15-6 advantage with 11:50 left in the half. Jamie Marshall (Pottsville, PA/Nativity B.V.M) scored twice from behind the arc and Bear also knocked down a trey in the run

. The Bullets return to action on Saturday when they host Bryn Mawr. Game time is 1 p.m.
